2022 NASCAR Xfinity Series Race Twenty-Three Daytona

Afternoon qualifying for both Xfinity and Cup series was cancelled due to inclement weather. Reportedly heavy rain with thunder and lightning moved through at midday and was predicted for the afternoon.

According to MRN NASCAR planned to start the event on time. Driver introductions was delayed due to weather and, shortly thereafter, the race was delayed. At 2100 eastern MRN reported the rain has stopped falling and the track dryers are working to dry the track surface. It’s been a hellish week for me, so I’m going to add time to the dvr recording and go to bed.

I set the time, then cleaned up the house a bit. So here I almost two house later watching the start of the race.

The stages for tonight’s event are 30-30-40.

Race starts at 2252 eastern with AJ Allmendinger (16) and Noah Gragson (9) leading the 38 car field.

Caution on lap 15 of 100 for a spin by Sammy Smith (18).

Caution on lap 20 of 100 for a flat left front tire for Kyle Sieg (38).

Ty ‘LittleJoe’ Gibbs (54) finishes first to end stage one.

Sheldon creed spins on lap 59 of 100 off the front bumper of Justin Allgaier (7) who was receiving a strong push from teammate Sam Mayer (1).

Noah Gragson (9) wins the stage.

It has been an enjoyable race. The viewer got to see the racing from generally reasonable camera shots. On lap 67 of 100 they’ve gone to the gimmick shots. Now we’re stuck with bumper-cam and windscreen shots. Granted they’re logging laps now, more so than at any other point of the race.

Caution on lap 71 of 100 for a spin into and through the wet infield grass by Riley Herbst (98). It was a very strange incident. Riley seemed to just turn right and keep going to the grass where he became a passenger through the grass. Steve Post of MRN says the left rear tire was down and the crew is having trouble getting the roof flaps down.

On lap 80 of 100 we saw lightning flashing as the field raced around the track. The race continues so I guess it was not within the distance which mandates a red flag.

Caution on lap 82 of 100 for a crash involving Joe Graf Jr (07), John Hunter Nemecheck (28) and Sheldon Creed (2). JHN spun in front of Sheldon who turned toward the wall and in front of Joe Graf Jr who had nowhere to go. Someone else in a Menard colored car got a little piece of Sheldon Creed (2) when he bounced off Graf. JHN spun from a push by Brandon Brown (68).

MRN on lap 87 of 100 mentions the lightning flashing over the ocean.

Caution on lap 90 of 100 for a crash involving AJ Allmendinger (16), Sam Mayer (1), Justin Allgaier (7), Josh Berry (8). MRN reports Myatt Snider (31) was collected in the incident.

Restarting on lap 96 of 100 with Noah Gragson (9) and Daniel Hemric (11) on the front row.

Landon Cassill (10) kisses the wall on lap 97 of 100 but continues.

Caution on lap 97 of 100 for a multi-car crash involving Daniel Hemric (11), Anthony Alfredo (23), David Starr (08), Brandon Jones (19), Justin Allgaier (7), Justin Haley (14), Riley Herbst (98), Jeb Burton (27), Sage Karam (44), Matt Mills (78), Landon Cassill (10). Hemric tried to block the lower lane too late, got loose and spun in front of the field sending lots of cars around.

Overtime

Restarting with Austin Hill (21) and Noah Gragson (9) up front.

Big crash as Brandon Brown spins in front the field involving Ryan Sieg (39), Ricky Stenhouse Jr (48), Alex Labbe (36), Kyle Sieg (38), Brandon Brown (68), Ty Gibbs (54), Blaine Perkins (02), 14, Riley Herbst (98), Bayley Currey (4), Caesar Baccarella (45), Myatt Snider (31), Josh Williams (5).

Restart, second overtime, with Austin Hill (21) and Noah Gragson (9) on the front row followed by AJ Allmendinger (16), Timmy Hill (13), Jeremy Clements (51), Landon Cassill (10), Sage Karam (44) and Ryan Vargas (6).

Noah Gragson (9) gets turned into the wall by AJ Allmendinger (16) who got a big push from Jeremy Clements (51) and gets hit by Landon Cassill (10), collecting Ty Gibbs (54), Blaine Perkins (02), Matt Mills (78), Jeb Burton (27), Myatt Snider (31).

Allmendinger (16) is out of gas during the caution laps.

Austin Hill is on the apron. He pulled down onto the apron as they come to the green flag.

Restarting in the third overtime period with Austin Hill (21) – on the apron – then back onto the track and Jeremy Clements (51) on the front row.

Austin Hill (21) is out of fuel

Clements gets the lead on a push from Karam.

Riley Herbst (98) goes for a slide as they come to the white flag.

Jeremy Clements (51) is shown as the leader as the white flag and the caution come out.

Jeremy Clements takes the checkered flag under caution for the second win of his career.

That was an enjoyable race. We actually got to see the race for a change and it was worth watching. It was exciting, very intense, very competitive, memorable for Jeremy Clements’ win, definitely worth staying up for. I had an idea, throughout the day, that this race would be the race of the weekend.
