The pit reporters have a round. They do a piece on Jimmie finding the little kid who gave him such an enthusiastic hug last week, then go to the Race Day crew. Very interesting. Lulled me into a false sense of comfort. For a change I had the volume turned up – until Hot-to-Trotta began yelling. Someone get that chick a volume control! Now the tv is on mute. I find NASCAR racing and other sports relaxing to watch – except when people are yelling at me. There’s a difference between speaking with excitement and yelling. Both produce a stress result in the human body, but the former leaves you feeling good as it wears off, the latter takes longer for the stress to dissipate and leaves you feeling drained.

I have become a major Bo Smith fan for the record. That kid hugging Jimmie makes me smile every time I think about it. Today he’s hanging with the 48 crew. We should all be that joyful!

I noticed there was a thing on the side indicating Brian France will address the “Driver’s Council” at Dover. Denny needs a muzzle. It’s funny, the media complained about the ‘super secret probation’ – fines handed out to drivers for comments they made which were detrimental to the sport. Some people never learn that everything that crosses his or her mind needs to come out of his or her mouth. It seems best to me if NASCAR teaches them this overdue lesson without public humiliation, but since the NASCAR media has the second loudest voice in the sport they got their way and drivers without an internal edit button blather on. I have no problem with a meeting between NASCAR and the drivers, but I don’t think we need to know about it. If they want an open dialogue, behind closed doors with NASCAR the drivers need to leave it behind closed doors and not go blabbing to the media that it happened, like they won something. That sort of behaviour is counter-productive.

The fans don’t want fast, closer, lower-cost racing. The fans want great racing. The people with money want lower-cost racing.

I agree with DW the drivers should have one voice. They should get together on their own, tell their representative what they want said to NASCAR, then Brian France, or whomever from NASCAR should meet with that one person and have a discussion. The voice can rotate so no one driver is totally responsible for meeting with NASCAR as the Driver’s Council representative. The drivers have to trust the person going in doing the talking. NASCAR also has to trust the person going in doing the talking. A group of drivers going in to talk to NASCAR sounds like a recipe for chaos to me. NASCAR has always met with drivers one-on-one and that seems to have worked so far.

Martin Truex Jr’s paternal grandmother died on Wednesday.

Can someone get Larry McReynolds a dialect coach and a memo asking him to refrain from mispronouncing the word further until further notice? I have absolutely no issue with a southern accent. In fact there are southerners that I could read me anything. But, I don’t like demonstrations of laziness or the lack of education in my broadcasters. Color, regional charm, I’m all for them. Sounding as though you’ve simply not progressed far enough in school to learn how to speak American, that’s unacceptable. A lot of people have attended substandard schools. I count myself among them. I was born and raised in the south. I still learned to pronounce words properly. I don’t speak like someone from another region of the country. I speak like a southerner with basic education. I believe everyone should. People emulate, imitate, and learn so many things from television and the internet. The proper pronunciation of common words should be among them. There’s no excuse for a display of that sort of ignorance in this day and age.

I’m struggling to watch the race. They’re going around the track, but I’m not seeing much action. The fact they keep showing beauty shots seems to indicate the production crew feel much the same.

28 of 160 laps to go.

Martin Truex Jr WINS!!!!

Jimmie Johnson finishes third.

It’s lovely to see other crew chiefs, Chad Knaus, Rodney Childers, and other crew chiefs along with Rick Hendrick coming over and congratulating Cole Pearn as he walks up pit road toward Victory lane.
In NASCAR news this week:

NASCAR Notebook: Drivers Council Encouraged.

Bayne and Cobb Penalized.

Harvick’s Team Penalized.

Schwarzenegger to Drive Pace Car at Sonoma.

Childers Signs Contract Extension.

Logano Goes Hollywood.

Gordon Fan of Driver Council.

Childress Docked Owner Points.

No. 97 XFINITY Team Gets P3 Penalty.

Gronkowski to Drive Pace Car at Chicagoland.

Crafton Corrals Texas Win.

NASCAR stars voice support for new drivers’ council.

NASCAR CEO wants ‘more communication’ with drivers’ council.

Next Race: Michigan

GO 48!!!!

Interesting, they start Race Day with Chris Myers, DW and Mikey.
