Race Day is on. JohnnyTV, Kenny Wallace and Petty Kyle. Sigh. I wonder if the quality folks from ESPN’s racing coverage might oust some of the losers like Petty Kyle and Wooden Rut next year. Wishful thinking I’m sure. If I remember correctly Bestwick has been put on Indy car duty since Marty Reid got fired, so that’s one quality broadcaster who won’t be available.

So at 7:30 we’re done with Race Day, now its on to Chris Myers and Michael Waltrip. Sigh. And he had one of his cheating partners Clint Bowyer sitting beside him. Them together just brings back memories of Richmond. Seriously, they need to do something about Michael. DW is still recovering from gall bladder surgery so he will miss the Sprint Unlimited. Now why on earth Clint Bowyer is his replacement is beyond me. Dude! Find someone with a less checkered recent past to sit next to shameless Michael Waltrip.

The race got underway and was thrilling – simply because it was Sprint Cup racing. The thrill left quickly and I found myself paying more attention to dinner and our conversation about the ARCA race. Once dinner was done we would glance at the race while enjoying chocolate dipped strawberries from diAmano. (Thanks Craig!) Then Jimmie Johnson’s 48 shot across the screen headed for the infield wall. Boom went the dynamite. According to Mike Joy for the third time in a row Jimmie Johnson would not finish the Sprint Unlimited. Sigh. The race resume and the conversation turned to a discussion of last night’s earthquake. Bunny D was doubting that some co-workers actually felt the quake. I then relayed my experience, because I definitely felt it. It was amazing. I’ve always wanted to experience an earthquake without being in real danger. I did. It was brief and mild, but the Earth moved under my feet. Sweet!

Shortly thereafter Kenseth did his usual blocking, but misjudged Joey Logano’s position and caused nine car wreck the collected all 4 of the Stewart-Haas cars, Jeff Gordon, Ricky Stenhouse, Carl Edwards and Kenseth. When that wreck was over the field was cut on half. Stenhouse took out Danica. Several cars drove underneath other cars including Smoke driving under Jeff Gordon. Smoke walked away from the car under his own steam and said he was fine. He just wanted to know how Danica’s car got involved. She was trying to avoid Edwards after he’d been hit and ended up in a slide. She was fine until Ricky tore her door off after driving into the back of Kurt Busch. He later said he couldn’t really see and thought he was clear until he hit something hard which he found out in the Infield Care Center was Danica. Sounds like he’s going to have a long evening. Someone mentioned they share a motorhome.

After an amazing save by KyBu and a crash by Dale Jr. eight cars took the final green flag restart and Denny Hamlin ended up winning.

The fans voted to have the field line up by practice times, for the segments to be divided 30, 25, 20 and for the final segment the running order was determined by the race off pit road (the only choice that matched my vote).

KHarv rejoined the race and made it to the finish, though I thought he’d missed laps after the accident, but oddly he was on the lead lap at the final restart.

Tomorrow is Qualifying Day. 11 drivers will be guaranteed positions in the Daytona 500 at the end of the qualifying session. As a result of the engine issues those cars will start at the back of the field for both the Budweiser Duel and the Daytona 500.

Next Race: Daytona 500
GO 48!!!!

There are 18 cars in the field for tonight’s Sprint Unlimited: Official Entry List for the 2014 Sprint Unlimited: #1-Jamie McMurray, Cessna Chevy #2-Brad Keselowski, Miller Lite Ford #4-Kevin Harvick, Jimmy Johns Chevy, [won in 2013, 2010, 2009] #9-Marcos Ambrose, Stanley Ford #10-Danica Patrick, GoDaddy.com Chevy #11-Denny Hamlin, FedEx Express Toyota #14-Tony Stewart, Mobil1 Chevy, …

Continue reading “2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Pre-Season Race Sprint Unlimited”

[4,8,9

post-804","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-daily","category-sports","category-things
["GET
