A full weekend of racing for a change with the Truck Series on Friday night, Nationwide Series on Saturday afternoon, and Cup Racing on Sunday.

Jimmie Johnson qualified on the pole for Sunday’s race. Matt Kenseth will start 14th.

Erik Jones, at 17, became the latest youngest winner ever in the Truck series. He qualified on the front row. Watermelon Boy Ross Chastain won the pole. The two dueled throughout the evening with Jones winning most of the battles, including the final battle for the win. From Ross Chastain’s comments, he lost his ride by not winning that race. Congrats to Erik Jones on his first win. John Hunter Nemechek made a fine run in the race. Things were going well for Darrell Wallace Jr until the latter stages of the race when he and Timothy Peters got together.

Nationwide Qualifying is underway and Derricke Cope opened the session with a crash on his qualifying lap. A couple of drivers will have to go to the house since there are 42 entries and 40 positions available. KyBu gets the pole.

Nicole Manske Briscoe is out on maternity leave. Mike Massaro covered for her. I miss Nicole. I hope this was her scheduled leave and there are no issues. I remember reading she’s due in December, so this is probably part of her scheduled leave. Massaro is always a bit … well, lame really on the desk. I don’t know why – can’t put my finger on it.

Eric McClure hits the wall on the first lap of the race in the #14 Hefty car.

KyBu stunk up the show for the first half of the race. Eventually ‘It’ took the lead for a moment, but KyBu regained it. Since it’s almost the last race of the season (next week’s race is the season finale) everybody is playing it safe and racing conservatively overall which makes for a very boring show. Strangely, I’m okay with that for the moment – probably because I expected it. There were over 100 laps of green flag racing – the longest green flag run since the re-pave.

Caution on lap 104 for debris in turn one.

Caution is out on lap 130 for Brad Sweet spinning in turn two. He says something broke. He spun in practice also.

Caution is out on lap 137 on the restart for Kevin Swindell who kissed the wall.

Caution is out on lap 142 on the restart for Bradley K who hit the wall and did a lot of damage to the rear of his car. Brian Scott got into the back of him.

Caution number six is out on lap 148 on the restart, Kevin Swindell in the wall again.

Caution is out on lap 155 of 200. Kyle Larson hit the wall,

KyBu led 168 of 200 laps to win the race. Justin Allgaier finished second fending off a late race charge by Frankenstein (Austin Dillon). Joe Gibbs is still four points behind Penske in the owner’s championship despite ‘It’/Bradley K’s issues. This is KyBu’s 12th win this season in the Nationwide Series. Austin Dillon is in Justin Allgaier’s window. They’re having a mildly heated discussion. Sam Hornish finished fifth.

In his post-race interview when asked what he said to Allgaier Frankenstein said he was talking to Allgaier about bumping him, and Allgaier said he didn’t. When Austin looked at the video he saw that Allgaier was telling the truth. Typical.

Race Day is another beautiful day at Phoenix International Raceway with blue skies and mild temperatures.

I’m missing Nicole again on the pre-show, though Massaro is doing okay. I so wish someone would get Brad Daugherty off that desk! He adds nothing. He’s consistently one of two things – a myna bird (repeating what’s just been said by someone else), or wrong. Rusty has thoughts, opinions, guesstimations, and comments and with his history, an educated background in the sport. Ray has a vast store of knowledge, thoughts, opinions, and experience. He, like Rusty, is also justifiably an expert. Brad co-owns a race team. While he does have a financial stake in NASCAR, overall, when he starts speaking he seems to be just another fan. It would be just as valuable (and probably a lot less costly) to actually have a fan’s opinion on when it’s Brad’s turn to speak. Understand, I am NOT advocating injecting fans into the pre-show (live or tweeted). I’m just saying he brings nothing, but a cash investment, to the table. His chair is basically wasted. And since Ray and Rusty both have experience as owners Brad has nothing unique to offer. The fact that he sounds as though he rolled off the turnip truck doesn’t help. The fact that most of his statements have just been made by one of the guys sitting next to him – or – if its an original ‘thought’, are obviously ill-conceived makes his continued position on the desk smacks of affirmative action. End of rant for the moment.

According to what Ray just said it sounds like clouds have moved into the area. That’s surprising.

Nice piece on how different drivers ended up with different numbers. Ryan McGee seems to be a really strong ESPN NASCAR presence suddenly. I’ve been unable to catch NASCAR Now these days, more often than not, but when I’ve watched I’ve usually seen a piece by McGee. I don’t think he has ‘it’ for tv, but he tends to write pretty well.

One final thing about Daugherty. Could someone turn off his mic and tape his mouth when Massaro or Nicole are trying to bump out of a segment. His constant bellowing is truly aggravating.

Jimmie introducing the soldier reuniting with his family was sweet. Nice touch on the day before Veteran’s Day.

A mixture of sun and clouds in Avondale, Arizona as the pre-race ceremonies conclude.

Jimmie Johnson will lead the field to the green flag for 312 laps. Carl is the in-race reporter.

On the first lap they end up three wide on the front row as Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin end up beside him. After a tap on the bumper from Joey Logano he’s shuffled back to sixth position. Great save by Jimmie.

Jeff Gordon wrestles the lead away from Denny. Harvick takes second from Denny. Jimmie passes Joey from fifth at lap 25. Kurt Busch is now stalking Denny. Kurt lost the back end of this car and Jimmie went around him. Jimmie is now passing Denny for third on lap 28.

Caution is out on lap 51 for Denny Hamlin spinning. He’d been complaining about his car being too loose. Jeff Gordon wins the race off pit road followed by Harvick and Jimmie. Justin Allgaier got close to Denny’s back bumper and took some air off the back bumper and around went Denny.

Harvick takes the lead from Jeff Gordon on the restart.

Jimmie gets past Jeff Gordon on lap 60 for second position.

On lap 64 Dale Jr. makes an unscheduled pit stop for a loose wheel. There are about six cars that are a lap down, about thirty on the lead lap.

Caution is out on lap 100 for Joe Nemechek getting a piece of the wall.

Some guys played a strategy move and took two tires on the stop to get track position. The leaders all took four. Keselowski, Kahne, and Edwards all took two and came out of the pits at the front. Kasey and ‘It’ are on the front row for the restart. Kasey takes the outside lane. He holds on for the lead.

Caution is out on lap 117 or 312 for Timmy Hill who spun and backed it into the wall. Heavy rear damage.

Caution is out on lap 132 for Dave Blaney going around after Travis Kvapil’s car blows up. There might be oil on the track from Kvapil.

‘It’ and Harvick are front row for the restart since most of the field didn’t come into the pits. Keselowski gets the lead as Harvick seemed to slow up on the restart – maybe he spun his tires, maybe he was making sure he didn’t beat Bradley K to the line since BK is known to play games on restarts.

Caution is out on lap 145 as Almirola got into the back of the 83 of Reutimann which spun him around in front of Cole Whitt who ended up in the wall as he tried to avoid hitting Reutimann and was hit from behind and the side and Danica got hit by Justin Allgaier who was hit from behind by someone.

Jamie McMurray takes the lead on the restart. Jeff Gordon takes it back. Due to the differing pit strategies Jimmie is mired in the pack on this run.

Caution is out on lap 164 for JJ Yeley up against the wall. Jimmie is back in 26th place after Carl Edwards got loose and almost took Jimmie out. Carl was in the middle Harvick on the inside. Jimmie on the outside. Carl barely saved it, as did Jimmie.

Kenseth had a 25 second pit stop. There was confusion as to what was going to happen – Ratcliff initially said right sides, then said no, left sides, the said all four, and then Matt was on the hose and had to back up. He went from 7th position to 29th. Jimmie is in 25th right now.

Newman, who didn’t pit, takes the lead on the restart. Jeff Gordon led off pit road and is in 18th place due to the differing pit strategies.

Caution is out on lap 192 for David Reutimann who has been into the wall it appears. It looks like a hard hit. The back end of the car is gone. It has buckled up to the back window. There’s a small fire under the back of the that they’re trying to get put out. David has climbed out of the car. It took him a few minutes. It seems he might have lost a tire and went into the wall hard.

The leaders came in for pit stops on this round. Dale Jr and Ryan Newman are the first two off the pit lane.

Reutimann is out of the infield care center. He says he’s okay. He said the brake pedal went soft, then the brakes were gone and he pumped the pedal and only had rear brakes. Dale or Petree said when you pump the brakes at that point it just locks up the rear brakes.

Kasey and Logano lead the field on the restart. Logano takes off hot and leaves Kasey in the dust so to speak. Eventually Kasey takes the lead from Logano.

Jimmie is battling Logano for the second position on lap 228.

Joey is in on lap 229 for a scheduled pit stop. With 84 laps to go he’s packing it full of fuel to run to the end.

With 46 laps to go Kevin Harvick is out of gas leading the race. He comes into his pit. They thought they could get to lap 268 before he would need to come in. Dale Jr. is now the race leader. He’s not yet made a pit stop. The ten drivers in his group are now coming in for their pit stops (including Jr.)

Newman, JPM, Biffle, Ambrose all still need to pit. Newman leads now.

With 35 laps to go that group has come in for pit stops and now Carl Edwards is the race leader. Newman ran out of fuel.

Caution is out on lap 283 for debris in turn three. Probably something that fell off Danica’s car most likely.

Carl leads after the restart, getting away from Kasey Kahne pretty quickly.

Lead change on the white flag lap as Carl is out of gas. Harvick wins, Kasey finishes second Jimmie finishes third, Dale J, Kurt Bush round out the top five. Kenseth finishes 23rd.

In NASCAR news this week:

RCR Hires Mike Coughlan as Technical Director.

Labonte Uncertain About His Future.

Martin Indicates He Won’t Race in 2014.

Phoenix Altered Gordon, Bowyer Friendship.

Report: Montoya Faces Scrutiny From IRS.

Richard Petty Museum to Move Home.

Busch Wins, While Dillon Extends Points Lead.

Hornaday Looking for a Ride for 2014.

Jones Becomes Youngest Series Winner.

Wallace Slaps Competitor; No Penalties Expected.

Jeff Burton will race part time in 2014.

Steve Addington among crew chiefs who could be on the move.

Country music star Toby Keith to serve as grand marshal at Homestead.

Jimmie Johnson defends Chad Knaus, says he meant no disrespect to Keselowski.

Next Race: Homestead

GO 48!!!!

The weather has been gorgeous in Phoenix, though the track has given the drivers a few problems.
