This year the race was divided into four 20 lap segments, a mandatory pit stop then a 10 lap final segment. If any driver won all five segments he would receive a million dollar bonus. After the four segments the field enters the pits based on their average finishing order. Also to spice up qualifying they removed the speed limit on pit road. It made the mandatory pit stop rather amazing at times. Jimmie slid through his stall, backed up, and was penalized an additional five seconds for a loose lug nut. The only one with a worst pit stop was Kevin Harvick who’s car blew up at the very end of practice. Oddly, Marcos Ambrose blew an engine seconds before Happy blew and engine. So both of them ended up in backup cars making the first laps in those cars during qualifying. Ambrose also slid through his pit stall, so his stop was just a teeny bit better than Jimmie’s. Carl won the pole with an amazing run and amazing pit stop. It was an awesome run. Martin Truex Jr. won the pole for the Sprint Showdown. Jamie McMurray won the Sprint Showdown to transfer into the All-Star Race along with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. who finished second. Danica was given the fan vote and was booed soundly as it was announced.

Rain arrived during the first segment of the race and caused a red flag condition for a while, but passed relatively quickly.

Kurt Busch won the first segment. Kyle Busch won the second segment. Kyle Busch won the third segment. Kurt Busch won the fourth segment. Kurt entered pit road first followed by Kyle Busch,

While Kurt and Kyle’s average finish was the same, the tie was decided by their finishing order in the final segment. They were followed in by Kasey Kahne and Jimmie Johnson. The Hendrick boys beat the Busch brothers out of the pits with Kasey winning the race off pit road and Jimmie following closely. On the restart Jimmie and Kasey raced side-by-side until Jimmie pulled away.

Jimmie won the All-Star Race 1.7 seconds ahead of Joey Logano who had a good pit stop and made a pretty good run. Jimmie became the first four-time winner of the All-Star Race and the second person to win consecutive All-Star Races. The last person to do so was Davey Allison in 1991-92.

SPEED put up their guestimations as to the average finish for the top ten, which was WRONG (from what Mike Joy was saying), they were using faulty calculations. For some reason they kept including starting positions in their calculations. Everytime he mentioned where drivers would probably pit, he continually mentioned Jimmie’s starting position as the reason his pit entry position would be bad. As it turned out NASCAR seemed less confused. Unfortunately they put up a graphic of their unofficial calculations and while Mike repeatedly said these were unofficial people decided the fix was in and SPEED was right and NASCAR was making sure Jimmie would win. Dude! Seriously?? Whatever!!!

In NASCAR news this week:
1. Kurt Busch went to Indianapolis to test for his rookie license with Michael Andretti.
