The racing has been good enough the past few weeks that I am actually excited about the upcoming races! Talladega has been boring the past few years – since Tony Stewart led the single file parade in protest of last minute rules about pushing. I no longer look forward to ‘Dega (which provided the best races of the year to me). I hope the racing lives up to the past and I hope the weather holds off on Sunday.

The Appeals Board upheld NASCAR’s penalties against Penske (2, 22). Roger Penske will now take the matter further up the ladder to John Middlebrook. RCR is appealing the suspension of two crew members for fighting in the incident between Brian Scott and Nelson Piquet Jr. Brian said he talked to Nelson to try to get him to put his personal feelings aside about Brian and race professionally.

On Friday the Sprint Cup guys practice with an eye toward Saturday qualifying getting rained out. If it is rained out Carl Edwards will have the pole and Jimmie will start 8th.

International Motorsports Hall of Fame 250
ARCA is back on television! As usual the ARCA drivers put on an enjoyable show. Justin Allgaier is on the desk with Rick Allen and Phil Parsons. It’s lovely! THANK GOD NO MICHAEL WALTRIP!!!! Rain is predicted for late this evening, so the race began a bit early. Drivers are racing the rain expecting to only go halfway. For a while we saw some fine Superspeedway driving, then the wrecks began. Milka Duono and John Wes Townley make contact and JWT smashes both walls. He was slow getting out of the car. Shortly after the restart following that caution period the 2 gets hung out on the restart, tries to force his way into line in front of Milka causing her to check-up. The car behind Grant Enfinger’s 90 lifted Grant’s rear tires off the ground running over him and the wreck was on collecting about half a dozen cars. Milka’s out of the race, along with James Hylton, Justin Boston, Bo LeMastus and several others. About five laps after the restart debris blew through the field causing another caution. On the restart from the debris caution a car spun, he got it turned in the right direction, no caution, as the lap continued, a car got into the wall, but was able to get out of harm’s way quickly, so no caution. John Wes is out of the infield care center. TV asked for an interview. He declined saying he wanted to talk to Milka before speaking on camera. On lap 53 the spotters are talking a bit more about rain as the showers are picking up. The 5 of Bobby Gerhart is off the track. Looks like he blew up. He was trying to get to pit road immediately, but was in traffic and couldn’t get down. With 39 to go the caution comes out for the 5 which is out of power and parked in front of the exit for the safety trucks on the backstretch. During the caution, the rain picked up a bit more resulting in additional caution laps. With 28 to goo caution is out for a problem between Thomas Praytor and Darrell Bashem. Praytor lost a tire and hit Bashem. 29 to go as we restart as Frank Kimmel continues to lead. 22 to go the caution comes out for rain. Ray says the rain may be here for the rest of the evening. They’ve brought the cars down to pit road and stopped them there. Red flag is out. Frank has led 37 laps. They’re putting covers over the cars on pit road, but so far the drivers are still in. They’ve called the race! FRANK KIMMEL WINS!!!! Congrats on his 77th win in the ARCA series. He was tearful in the interview.
03/05/2013 7:01:01 PM

Denny has been cleared to start the Sprint Cup race by his doctors and by NASCAR. They’ve put a hatch in the roof to allow him to come out of the top of it and as he’s coming down off the roof, Brian Vickers will be sliding in the window and getting strapped in.

After a three hour rain delay the Nationwide Series race at Talladega got underway. Early on the racing was tight, but orderly overall. Danica went for a quick, early spin and wrecked her car well. Throughout the early portion of the race cars hit the wall as tandem racing went wrong sending Blake Koch, first-time-pole-winner Travis Pastrana, Reed Sorenson, Jeffrey Earnhardt, and Kyle Larson. As weather moved in and the laps wound down and darkness approached the racing got hot and heavy. Kurt Busch was in the hunt consistently along with Regan Smith, Kasey Kahne, and Joey Logano. NASCAR announced that it would shorten the race by ten laps once the rain grew heavier, so after a massive crash that collected Brian Scott (who actually caused the Travis Pastrana/Reed Sorenson wreck), Johanna Long, Nelson Piquet Jr. and many others who were running pretty well. NASCAR decided to give the field a single attempt at a green, white, checkered finish. Austin Dillon was leading at the time and heavily begging for the race to end on caution due to darkness. No dice, thank God! The field were tandem hot and heavy until the final trip through the tri-oval when the duos split and chaos reigned. Kasey Kahne, Joey Logano and Regan Smith were three-wide neck and neck heading to the checkered flag. A massive wreck ensued behind them and the caution was thrown! THE CAUTION WAS THROWN ON THE FINAL SECTION OF THE FINAL LAP!!!! As a result Regan Smith is credited with the win though Kasey Kahne was leading as they crossed the finish line. Regan was leading by a nose when the caution came out. BOOOOOOOOOO!!!! The field had wrecked behind them! What was the purpose of that final caution?????? I’d like to hear NASCAR’s explanation! A sucky ending to an okay race. I’m not a fan of the tandem racing, so that immediately lowers the race rating. The best tandem race is only a relatively good race to me. This one wasn’t the best, but it was pretty good for a tandem race. Regan was declared the winner. Joey finished second. Kasey finished third. Kurt Busch who led the most laps finished fourth. Bleccchhh!
Carl Edwards was in the booth again. I found myself saying Shut Up Carl to the tv so often it became funny to me and to Bunny D – and Carl is her driver! Even she was tired of his talking as though we, the viewers, had never watched a NASCAR race before and had no knowledge of the sport. It was maddening! I began to wonder if Larry McReynolds taught him broadcasting due to all of his blabbing. I find myself getting excited when the pit studio crew winds down and begins the toss to the booth, until I see Carl. Where’s DJ???? Dale Jarrett we need you!!
5 May 2013 04:12:40 AM

Aaron’s 499
Carl ran the fastest in first practice so he was on the pole since qualifying was rained out yesterday. After a rather boring race led mostly by Matt Kenseth there was a 13 car accident followed by more boredom until the clouds moved in and rain began to fall. Then a group of Fords made some two tire calls in the pits and made a run for the front once raindrops began falling on their windshields. So when the caution came out Carl was slightly ahead of Ricky Stenhouse. Then began a red flag rain delay. Trevor Bayne’s 21 car blew up relatively early.

At 6pm FOX allowed the local stations to do news while track drying continued, so of course FOX 5 Atlanta went to news. Just about that time a storm hit our area, probably the storm that hit Talladega a little while ago dropping large hail and torrential rain.

After a three and a half hour rain delay the race is back underway at Talladega. FOX 5 dropped out of their newscast at ten before the hour to return to NASCAR coverage. They’re racing all out – apparently racing the weather again. One of the crew chiefs saw raindrops falling when they’d gone a dozen laps or so. So far, no caution. With 44 to go Joey Logano heads to pit road under the belief his engine is blowing up. Caution is out with 15 to go because Michael McDowell in the 98 lost the right front tire. Weather is still a concern keeping most of the cars out of the pits during this caution. Bowyer is complaining about Michael Waltrip’s driving choices during the race. The more things change the more things stay the same. Jimmie is leading the race at this point, followed by Matt Kenseth. The clouds are low and dark and droplets are visible on some of the cameras. The restart will come with ten laps to go. Denny, on the pit studio desk, says “this is a disaster waiting to happen”. The pace car has its headlights on. Caution is out with six laps to go as Kurt Bush goes rolling – barrel rolling – down the track. Danica, JJ Yeley, Clint Bowyer, Jeff Gordon, David Stremme, Marcos Ambrose, Jamie McMurray all get damage. Kurt Busch’s 78 landed on top of Ryan Newman’s 39 car after the roll. Stenhouse clipped JJ Yeley and send him across the track starting the melee. All drivers are out of their cars and okay. Newman is steaming. He lambasted “them” for sending the cars back out in the dark, in the rain, and “getting what they wanted”, but not being able to keep the cars on the track. He was furious!

Looks like they’re heading for a green, white checkered finish. Kenseth is saying its too dark to continue. They’ve decided again to allow one attempt at a green, white, checkered finish and whatever flag comes out ends the race. Kenseth is in first, Carl in second, Jimmie in third. David Ragan took the lead with David Gilliland pushing him and WON THE RACE!!! Carl finishes third and Jimmie finishes fifth. Seven hours later, literally, the race is concluded and Front Row Motorsports takes first and second. Mega Congratulations to David Ragan, David Gilliland and Front Row Motorsports!!!

Another night race next Saturday at Darlington. BOOOOOOOOOOO on the night races!

Next Race: Darlington

GO 48!!!!

05/05/13 20:24:56

One of my previously favorite weekends starts off windy and rainy.
