Night Race. More action than the past few Richmond night races. I wasn’t tempted to fall asleep for a change. Nice race. Seems like the drivers were trying hard at the end of the race.

Denny Hamlin is bemoaning the fact he’s not cleared to drive tonight. I wish he’d go home and HEAL!!! For the sake of all that is just and holy – take care of your future Denny Hamlin! Sit your John Brown hind parts down and allow your body to heal fully before engaging in your very risky occupation. Dude!!! Have a little common sense – even if you have to borrow it!!!

Kevin Harvick wins with an awesome move during the green, white, checkered finish.

Jimmie finished 12th after Tony Stewart got lose and collected him.

Last night in the Nationwide Series race Brian Scott and Nelson Piquet Jr. had a bit of a tussle after the race. Apparently, their team members continued the row in the motor home lot and two RCR team members were taken into custody. Brian Scott seems to always be in the midst of some issue.

Tonight, during the cool down lap, while Kurt Busch was knocking doors with Matt Kenseth who did to Kurt what Kurt did to Smoke, Tony Stewart ran KuBu into the wall bumping doors and they continued down pit road. Once they left their cars a bit of jawing occurred. There was a Kurt Busch team member who had the audacity to put his hand on the television camera which was filming it. I think NASCAR needs to let him know that’s not okay. KuBu had a point – it was a free-for-all at the end of the race.

During the week NASCAR levied a major fine on the 20 team. Their engine didn’t pass post-race inspection – one of the connecting rods was not the required weight. Joe Gibbs Racing/Matt Kenseth was stripped 50 driver points and three bonus points. Also, his win will not count, if needed, for a wild card spot in the Chase. He also lost the pole. Crew chief Jason Ratcliff is suspended for six races and fined $200,000 and on probation until the end of the year. Joe Gibbs’ owner’s license is suspended for six races and docked 50 owner points. So he won’t earn owner points for the next six and lost some also. JGR gets their engines from TRD (Toyota Racing Development). TRD was docked five manufacturer’s points. Kenseth dropped from 8th to 14th in the points standings.

Joe Gibbs, Matt Kenseth and the rest of JGR have spent the week whining about the severity of the penalties. Go talk to Carl Long about that! They’re also saying they don’t cheat. Okay. I’m sure it was just a mistake, or unforeseeable circumstance. Again, go talk to Carl Long. JGR has the money and it’s early enough in the season to fix the problem and overcome the points hit. Move on!!! It’s harsh, but NASCAR has made its point. DO NOT mess with the engines. If you do, expect to pay the price. JGR says they don’t cheat, but since they – like Carl Long – buy their engines they cannot speak for the intentions of the engine builder and are ultimately responsible for what they put in their car. If a vendor provided them with a part that they knew would not fit a template they wouldn’t use the part. I’m virtually certain they check and double check the equipment they will be submitting for NASCAR inspection – KNOWING – they are responsible and will be
punished if NASCAR flags them. Stop whining. Apologize. Move on!!! Everyone acknowledges that people in the garage plays on the edge of the rules in order to maintain their competitiveness. Therefore it stands to reason one may step over the line occasionally. When the line is crossed NASCAR needs to yank the leash. The force of the yank is equivalent to the seriousness of the infraction and the likelihood of copycat issues. Teams – be professional and diligent. You are the best in your business – act like it.

Penske was fined after Texas for unapproved parts in the rear suspension of the 2 and 22 cars. Both drivers were hit for 25 points, the crew chiefs fined $100,000 and suspended for six races. The car chiefs, chief engineers, and the team manager were all suspended for six races and will be on probation for the rest of the year. Penske will appeal, of course. Brad started yakking about the integrity of Penske being greater than everyone in the garage. GROW UP & SHUT UP!!! PLEASE!!! How can he have the arrogance to imagine he can vet then entire Penske (NASCAR) organization? Dude, try thinking before you speak, then think again, then one more time, then recognize the moment has passed and its time to move on, with your mouth closed.

I understand NASCAR is using the fans-will-leave-the-race-knowing-who-won “rule”, but I think they ought to consider modifying the rule book a bit. Fans left the race at Speedway Park in Jacksonville, Florida on 1 December 1963 knowing the announced name of the race winner, Buck Baker. Later it was determined that another driver crossed the finish line two laps in front of Baker. The win was awarded years later. I guess the rule didn’t count for that race. We know of at least one occasion when NASCAR didn’t apply this rule, for whatever reason. I think the time for that rule has come and gone in extenuating circumstances. Either the record book should reflect the circumstances, or the position should change. No, I don’t think the money should follow the final, official position, but I do think points and the official record should accurately reflect the entire circumstances of the race. It is NASCAR’s obligation to create a valid, accurate, true record
for future reference.

Next Race: Talladega

GO 48!!!!

Richmond.
