Joey Logano (22) wins the race and the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Championship holding off teammate Ryan Blaney (12).<\/p>\n

Congratulations to Joey Logano (22) on his third championship.<\/p>\n

Wife Britney, and children Hudson, Amelia, and Jamieson join Joey at the car to celebrate.<\/p>\n

Ryan Blaney (12) is squatting down seemingly getting some medical assistance after the race. He stops with that to do his television interview. Blaney doesn’t look or sound okay. He says he is ‘just worn out’. He turns back to the AMR Safety Team when the television interview is completed.<\/p>\n

MRN’s Alex Hayden is totally tearing up saying goodbye to Jeff Striegle after 30 years. Jeff announced it would be Mike Bagley in his seat next year. Tim Catafalmo will apparently be doing more, Striegle says we will be hearing a lot more from him next year. Striegle managed to keep it mostly together as he said goodbye to the crew.<\/p>\n

Steve Phelps presents the Bill France Cup to Joey Logano and crowns him the 2024 Cup Series Champion. The rest of the post-race coverage will be on peacock, so that’s it for 2024 NASCAR for me.<\/p>\n

I didn’t bother watching the race. I tuned in for the final three laps. I am okay with Joey Logano as champion. He has proven to be consistently good for the sport. I would have been pleased with Blaney as champion. The possibility of either of those two winning another championship was not enough to convince me to sit through the event. The possibility that either Tyler Reddick or William Byron would win was a deterrent from bothering with the race.<\/p>\n

While I believe the NASCAR ‘insiders’ who say race manipulation occurs all the time and has for years, blatant finish manipulation should have dire consequences that hurt more than they help. In the case of the Martinsville manipulation it cost the teams money, and they won’t get shown in the pit-box during the race, but really the punishment was a slap on the hand and Byron was allowed to compete for a championship despite being a part of a conspiracy to get him in. Christopher Bell was not believed when he said he did not intentionally use a banned move. William Byron did not address, nor reap punishment for, multiple teams colluding to manipulate the finish of the race, which is also banned. I guess his silence allowed him receive the benefit of the doubt not accorded Christopher Bell.<\/p>\n

In the past NASCAR has presented itself as a sport. More recently NASCAR has presented itself as primarily a marketing project that considers itself a sport. Without regard to the facts around the intricate relationship between NASCAR and the auto manufacturers, NASCAR should keep the business in the background and the sport aspect in the forefront. Allowing the marketing to take the lead causes the sport to look suspect and alienates fans. NASCAR needs to get back to acting like the fans are a priority. They have fallen into the fallacy that the voices on the marketing platforms (Facebook, X, and the others) represent the entirety of the fan base. Improving the car and the racing on some tracks is a step in the right direction. It is also a small step due to the depths to which the sport had fallen while chasing new fans that were not interested in the sport, while emulating ‘stick and ball sports’, while pushing the marketing agenda and using the jargon during broadcasts, rather than broadcasting races like a sport. NASCAR lost so much leverage as they lost fans to substandard races, with substandard broadcasts. They changed the sport for 18-35 year old males with interests in other sports while ignoring the loyal fans who supported the sport for generations. NASCAR showed callous disregard for their fanbase in their attempts to translate gamblers and video game fans into race fans. The people who will buy a ticket to a race are a very different group than those whose only interest is in betting on races, or pretending to race in a game. I believe it is possible to appeal to those disparate groups, as well as the noisy social media crew. It will require expertise in each field. A person wholly educated and invested in social media does not have the necessary ‘irl’ skills to maintain and grow the fans in the stands. They can swing the pendulum with a timely activation, but any momentum gained will be quickly lost as the pendulum quickly swings back since the target consumer notoriously has no attention span. Shedding previously loyal fans in favor of new fans with a reputation for lacking loyalty, focus, and endurance, seems like an extremely expensive, endless game of whack-a-mole that will turn the sport into something unrecognizable and without a fanbase.<\/p>\n

I arrive at the end of the 2024 NASCAR season pleased that there were some exciting races during the season. I am looking forward to the possibility that the 2025 CW NASCAR broadcasts may return the televised version of the sport to exciting, watchable sporting events, reversing the trend of the past few years. I hope NASCAR will put the sporting nature back in the forefront. I hope NASCAR will make giant strides in improving every aspect and returning it to the higher quality of the past that made a NASCAR fan of me.<\/p>\n
