Race time moved up to 2:06 PM due to expected rain. PRN’s Doug Rice says the halfway point is lap 151 and that might become important later on.<\/p>\n

On lap 58 of 301 PRN is spending time talking about teammates Kyle Larson (5) and William ‘WilliB’ Byron (24) racing each other near Darrell “Bubba” Wallace (23). They said they don’t need to pedal hard. they’re not in danger of going a lap down. They’re not in danger of collecting stage points since they’re nowhere near the top ten. Yep, nothing going on except logging laps.<\/p>\n

Since there’s weather expected later, I’m guessing NASCAR gave them the high sign to run to halfway clean, if possible, in case the weather arrives early. Once they get near the weather or near the scheduled laps they’ll probably start racing.<\/p>\n

Chase Elliott (9) led 41 laps before getting run down and passed by Christopher ‘CBell’ Bell (20).<\/p>\n

Christopher ‘CBell’ Bell (20) wins stage one 2.008 seconds ahead of second place.<\/p>\n

Green flag pit stops underway on lap 124 of 301.<\/p>\n

The television broadcast has a split-screen shot of the weather radar on lap 128 of 301.<\/p>\n

PRN’s Mark Garrow says halfway is lap 152 of 301.<\/p>\n

On lap 135 of 310 PRN is following the battle between teammates Christopher Bell (20) and last year’s NHMS winner Martin ‘MTJ’ Truex Jr (19). They are battling for second position behind Todd Gilliland (38) who has not made a green flag stop.<\/p>\n

PRN says there’s weather in the area, but it remains dry at the track.<\/p>\n

Caution on lap 141 of 301 for a spin by Daniel Hemric (31).<\/p>\n

Restarting on lap 148 of 301 with ‘Desperate’ Denny Hamlin (11), Joey Logano (22), and Corey LaJoie (7) up front. They stayed out during this pit cycle.<\/p>\n

At 1535 eastern the race is official as they pass the halfway point.<\/p>\n

Caution on lap 154 of 301 for spins involving Kyle ‘KyBu’ Busch, and Noah Gragson (10) while PRN’s Doug Rice and Rob Albright were talking about printing their boarding passes since they are be able to go home tomorrow now that the event has passed the halfway point.<\/p>\n

PRN’s Doug Rice says the air is not moving, it’s stale, so he thinks the weather will remain like this for the next 45 minutes.<\/p>\n

Restarting on lap 159 of 301 with ‘Desperate’ Denny Hamlin (11) and Joey Logano (22) on the front row followed by Hamlin’s teammate Martin ‘MTJ’ Truex Jr (19).<\/p>\n

PRN’s Doug Rice says, “There’s weather in the area and it’s reportedly kind of rough, so they know that if it gets here we’re frozen and they’ll call it a day”. Lap 176 of 301.<\/p>\n

Stage two ends with ‘Desperate’ up front.<\/p>\n

MTJ (19) had a bad pit stop. He’s gone from second to 27th.<\/p>\n

Restarting on lap 192 of 301 with Tyler ‘TyRed’ Reddick (45) and Michael McDowell (34) leading Kyle Larson (5), Todd Gilliland (38), Noah Gragson (10), Austin Cindric (2), Harrison Burton (21), and Denny Hamlin (11) to the green flag. Reddick and McDowell stayed out. Everyone besides Hamlin took two tires.<\/p>\n

PRN’s Doug Rice says the teams are expecting rain in 40 or 50 laps.<\/p>\n

Caution on lap 192 of 301 for a spin by Chase Elliott (9) with an assist from Joey Logano (22). Logano says his steering wheel is pointed at 3 o’clock when he’s driving straight down the backstretch. The 9 car is damaged on the front left wheel well.<\/p>\n

PRN reports they have to fix a right-front toe link for Joey Logano (22).<\/p>\n

Restarting on lap 199 of 301 with Reddick and McDowell up front.<\/p>\n

Caution on lap 199 of 301 for a spin by Corey LaJoie (7) with help from either Ryan Preece (41).<\/p>\n

PRN’s Doug Rice says they can see the ceiling started to drop in the direction where the weather usually comes in.<\/p>\n

Restarting on lap 205 of 301 with TyRed (45) and Michael McDowell (38)on the front row, as second place Kyle Larson (5) lines up behind Reddick.<\/p>\n

‘Desperate’ Denny Hamlin (11) has caught up to second place Larson and is crowding Larson up the track in an attempt to get the position.<\/p>\n

Caution on lap 207 of 301 for a spin by Martin Truex Jr (19) with help from Brad ‘It’ Keselowski (6).<\/p>\n

Doug Rice says the weather is 20 miles away from the track now on lap 210 of 301.<\/p>\n

As I guessed they’re starting to race now that the weather is near.<\/p>\n

The teams have wet weather tires available, so if there’s a short shower there’s the possibility they may put on the wets to finish the race.<\/p>\n

At 1629 on lap 217 of 301 PRN’s Doug Rice reports he’s seeing the first raindrops on the window of their broadcast booth.<\/p>\n

PRN reports NASCAR has radioed in saying heavy rain around the track.<\/p>\n

They’re going to bring the teams down pit road.<\/p>\n

Red Flag 1623 on lap 219 of 301.<\/p>\n

Wet weather tires are for a damp track, not a rainy track according to PRN’s Mark Garrow.<\/p>\n

The car covers are going on 1634 and the drivers are getting out of their cars.<\/p>\n

Sunset will be at 2030 in Loudon, New Hampshire according to Doug Rice.<\/p>\n

Noah Gragson (10) says they will put on the wet weather tires and go back racing.<\/p>\n

At 1649 Doug Rice says, “The rain is almost unperceptible” as he walked out onto the roof into the elements. He is advocating they use the wet weather tires.<\/p>\n

Alex Bowman (48) lost an engine early in the event. I heard them mention he was in the garage at one point, but I never heard them say anything about him losing an engine.<\/p>\n

Doug Rice says the rain has picked back up and he thinks maybe NASCAR was expecting that.<\/p>\n

Doug Rice says his visit in 1990 to the track was his first visit to the northeast – ever. He says the area reminded him of the Appalachian State area. He was looking at a Civil War monument and was surprised when he didn’t see wording about ‘our boys in gray’ and it made him, a self-described history buff, realize he lived in his own little bubble. He said he fell in love with the area.<\/p>\n

“It has not been gender-fied around here”, Doug Rice talking about his love of the area around the racetrack.<\/p>\n

Weather at 1657 eastern – Light rain, 73\u00b0F, Wind SSE 3 mph, Gusts 8 mph<\/p>\n

Mark Garrow says he’s been calling these races for 42 years.<\/p>\n

At 1710 PRN reports the track is under a 30 minute delay for lightning within eight miles of the speedway.<\/p>\n

The television broadcast appears to have gone to alternative programming – some show with Ryan Blaney. They’re showing the covered cars on pit road now, so maybe that was just a promo, or something else to kill time since they’re not capable of doing rain coverage.<\/p>\n

Doug Rice says this is his last year calling live racing. He’s talking about t-shirts that have been made for him. Money generated from the sales will go to Speedway Children’s Charities.<\/p>\n

At 1714 PRN says they’re going to turn it back over to the local stations while NASCAR considers all of their scenarios. They will be back on-air at 1745 to give an update. He said the lightning strike took place about ten minutes ago, so there’s still 20 minutes left on the lightning hold. They’re dragging their feet on actually throwing it back to local in case NASCAR makes a decision. The pylon shows severe weather in the area seek shelter. The grandstands are almost totally empty.<\/p>\n

Doug Rice is hinting that the race next year will likely be in autumn next year.<\/p>\n

The IndyCar pre-race show is schedule to begin at 1800 eastern.<\/p>\n

At 1722 the television broadcast just showed a commercial for the New Hampshire Cup race. There was also mention of next week’s Nashville race. I heard a Nashville radio commercial during the race. I guess ticket sales aren’t doing well for the event. The races have been awful at that track. I’d like to re-visit Nashville, but I have no interest in watching a race like the events I’ve seen from Nashville Speedway.<\/p>\n

Now the broadcast booth has thrown it to pit reporters Parker Kligerman and Marty Snider. They are inside somewhere and talking to each other. Seriously NBC needs to hire people who can actually handle the duties. They have people who can talk a lot, A LOT. They don’t have people who can entertain, enlighten, or do any of the things that professional broadcasters do – except get paid. It’s pathetic. They’re showing video from Parker Kligerman’s car – inside and bumper-cam and apparently listening to the audio as he spins multiple times. Parker mentioned that his language during the second stage yesterday was not indicative of his usual language. I didn’t care yesterday, since he’s not the first driver to use foul language on the radio, nor is it interesting, or something to seek out. I guess I now know why people used to complain about broadcast rain coverage back in the day. I’m guessing they felt about the booth and ESPN, SPEEDTV, TNT and FOXSports studio teams during that time like I feel about the NBC teams now.<\/p>\n

Kim Coon – horrid voice, without volume control – is doing an interview with Michael McDowell in that location where Parker and Snider were chit-chatting. I tend to mute Kim when she’s on the radio due to her screeching. Bunny always says she’s that loud on a microphone because it’s loud at the track. Since she’s indoors and the cars aren’t currently racing and she sounds like she’s yelling into the microphone, I think Bunny has been proven wrong. She’s just too loud and has a dreadfully screechy voice. I wonder who hires folks for NBC, because with the exception of Rick Allen, everybody else is screechy – Jeff Burton, Steve Letarte, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Dale Jarrett, Kim Coon, Kyle Petty, and Rutledge Wood. Parker Kligerman and Marty Snider are less screechy, but whiny. And Snider spends entirely too much time on-camera. He seems to think he’s broadcast booth material. He’s very wrong. They just don’t seem to hire people any hearing person, unrelated to those folks, would want to hear.<\/p>\n

Snider is interviewing Chris Buescher (17) in what Kim called the alternate area.<\/p>\n

Rick Allen says this is the worst of the rain at 1741 eastern as seen on the radar. They wanted to see how this rain is to determine if they can use the wet weather tires if they don’t totally lose the track. Steve Letarte is belly-aching about NASCAR possibly putting on wet weather tires, giving everyone equal tires suddenly, when they don’t have equal tires on the car now. Burton says he thinks they’d already be gone if they didn’t have those wet weather tires. He also said if they do use them the question is why didn’t they use them earlier. I don’t know why that’s the question. I got lost in what he was complaining about. He had been talking about visibility being the crucial factor as to whether they can restart. Between Letarte and Burton its just an excruciatingly long whine. Letarte repeats himself ad-nauseum, so that by the time Burton gets a chance to talk, its been a while of whine.<\/p>\n

Doug Rice says at 1746 he believes they’ve missed the window for more racing time. Mark Garrow says if it stops raining right now it’s too dark to see anything. These cars don’t have windshield wipers. Garrow says there’s no way they’re racing again. At 1748 he said the ceiling has dropped and it is pouring rain. They’re going to stay on-air because they believe NASCAR is going to make an announcement soon.<\/p>\n

Doug Rice says he thinks 2\/3s of the spotters have already left the track. Some of the drivers, like Michael McDowell, have already changed into street clothes. Garrow says now they have a tornado watch. Rice is actually saying the race fans are the losers in a deal like this.<\/p>\n

Doug Rice says it will probably be their final full field rundown at 1752.<\/p>\n

Booo! The IndyCar race coverage will begin on Peacock at 1800.<\/p>\n

Apparently the rain has eased and the sky is lighter according to the NBCSports booth. Steve Letarte says he wants to see more racing. Jeff Burton questions if they want to try wet weather tires this close to the playoffs with so many people trying to get into the playoffs.<\/p>\n

Doug Rice 1758 says the ceiling has lifted, the clouds have parted, the rain has stopped, and a bit of sun has shone and NASCAR has told the track dryers to get on the track.<\/p>\n

PRN’s Alan Cavana says at 1800 there’s no precipitation and this is the best weather they’ve had all weekend.<\/p>\n

Burton says they wouldn’t have waited all this time if NASCAR wasn’t thinking they would go back racing.<\/p>\n

Fans are coming back into the grandstands. They cheered as the drying equipment took to the track.<\/p>\n

PRN’s Garrow says they can see three or four mountain ranges over now and fifteen minutes ago they couldn’t see the trees behind turn two. They will be back at 1830 eastern for an update.<\/p>\n

The television broadcast is showing “Victory Lane Review” of last week’s race in Iowa at 1804.<\/p>\n

The television broadcast says they’re trying to get rid of the puddles on the track, because visibility is most important.<\/p>\n

At 1818 the television broadcast announces the teams are now allowed to do approved service on the cars as well as put on the wet-weather tires. Letarte believes approved service is everything they can do on a normal pit stop. Burton says Goodyear says the tires should last 30-35 laps. NASCAR will monitor the conditions closely regarding visibility and grip. Letarte says if this works like NASCAR hopes fans will have better opportunities to see racing with the wet weather tires. Michael McDowell has gotten back into his firesuit and is on pit road.<\/p>\n

I imagine Bunny is going to be furious about missing the IndyCar race…and just as I write that Rick Allen in the NBC NASCAR booth says IndyCar racing coverage will begin on CNBC at 1830 eastern. Hooray! The NASCAR broadcast has gone back to showing last week’s Iowa race.<\/p>\n

Christopher Bell (20) says he’s pumped up to run the wet weather tires. He says they ran them yesterday and they weren’t too different except they had a competition caution at lap 10 and the tires were gone. With the track having more water, he thinks that won’t be the case.<\/p>\n

PRN’s Doug Rice is talking about the fact that at 1758 he thought they were 2 minutes from calling the race. Now he says the drivers will be called to their cars in five minutes. I always quote the character Bobby Singer from “Supernatural” – “Don’t you ever get tired of being wrong?” when listening to Doug Rice.<\/p>\n

PRN reported earlier that the teams were allowed four sets of the wet weather tires.<\/p>\n

Michael McDowell imagines they will do 25 or 30 laps on wet weather tires before going back to slicks.<\/p>\n

Parker Kligerman says the teams have been discussing how much to adjust the cars for the wet weather tires. He says they will have a lot of turns of the wrench in the back window to adjust to the wet weather tires because they don’t turn as well. But that will take up a lot of time if they have competitive pit stops, so they’re trying to figure out how much to adjust, because they don’t know if the pit stops will be competitive or not.<\/p>\n

PRN says at 1840 drivers will be called to their cars and at 1843 they will start the engines. Television is showing various drivers in their cars, getting into their cars, and talking to their crews. PRN reports the drying teams have been told don’t worry about drying the track, but get as much water off the track as they can.<\/p>\n

Doug Rice says there was a mass exodus of fans earlier and now there’s a trickle of fans returning.<\/p>\n

NBCSports’ Rick Allen is talking about fans walking along with slices of pizza. Now Letarte and Snider are both asking for them to bring the pizza to them.<\/p>\n

NASCAR will decide when everybody has to take the wet weather tires off because everybody has to be on the same tire. PRN’s Brett McMillan says the teams won’t be able to fuel the cars. He says he just confirmed that. NBCSports’ Steve Letarte said they would be able to fuel the cars.<\/p>\n

The number of fans walking toward the grandstands that are getting shown on the tv broadcast seems to have increased.<\/p>\n

The fans are cheering as they drivers are told to restart the engines at 1843.<\/p>\n

The cars are rolling out of their pit stalls at 1844 eastern.<\/p>\n

Marty Snider said the only driver he spoke with who was unhappy about them restarting on wet weather tires was leader Tyler Reddick (45).<\/p>\n

NASCAR has to line the cars back up in the order they were in when the red flag came out.<\/p>\n

1847 the caution flag is out.<\/p>\n

Doug Rice mentions the chatter after NASCAR called the Coke 600 and said this race on a 1-mile track is kind of a litmus test. He said if they had this tire on a bigger track they maybe could’ve bought back an hour.<\/p>\n

Several teams are driving at the bottom of the track.<\/p>\n

PRN reports on lap 224 of 301 that Kyle Busch (8) has apparently hit the car while they’re circling under caution. He hit the outside wall. NBCSports, of course, doesn’t have footage from outside the car. They never seem to have decent footage from outside the car when an incident occurs. Their presence at the track seems useless. The 8 car is on the hook and headed to the garage. His crew chief, Randall Burnett, reportedly said they don’t know what happened the car just took off on him according to Marty Snider.<\/p>\n

Joey Logano (22) and Corey LaJoie (7) went sent to the back for pitting too soon causing the restart to get waved off.<\/p>\n

Some of the cars are riding the apron as often as possible trying to keep the tires on the wettest part of the track.<\/p>\n

CBell and Kyle Larson are working the track and have gained several spots into second and third. Larson restarted eighth and is in third behind CBell.<\/p>\n

NBCSports has a split-screen of Kyle Busch (9) walking away, in the garage area, holding his helmet.<\/p>\n

Caution on lap 231 of 301 for a spin by Ross Chastain (1).<\/p>\n

Mark Garrow keeps saying over and over that no one can complain that NASCAR didn’t do everything possible to finish this race.<\/p>\n

Restarting on lap 241 of 301 with Tyler Reddick (45), Christopher Bell (20), Kyle Larson (5), Ryan Blaney (12), and Todd Gilliland (38).<\/p>\n

CBell (20) takes over the lead from Tyler Reddick running on the inside apron.<\/p>\n

Chris Buescher (17), Kyle Larson (5), and Tyler Reddick (45) are battling for third position behind Ryan Blaney (12) on lap 251 of 301.<\/p>\n

Caution on lap 254 of 301 for a spin by Corey LaJoie (7).<\/p>\n

Hmm, nothing from NASCAR Digital since the restart on lap 242 of 301. And just like that an update at 1920.<\/p>\n

Almost the entire field is driving along the inside wall on the caution laps. A few who can’t fit on the inside try hugging the outside wall.<\/p>\n

CBell (20) told his crew chief he is good with the wets. Chase Elliott (9) said, when asked by his crew chief, he would rather have the slicks. The 9 spotter had to tell his crew chief Alan Gustafson that they can’t change tires unless NASCAR says they can change tires.<\/p>\n

Pit road is open, but NASCAR says the teams can’t change tires.<\/p>\n

Restarting on lap 262 of 301 with Christopher Bell and Kyle Larson on the front row. Rob Albright reports Christopher Bell said he would rather they let them put on the slicks and run it out. PRN and NBC seem to hear opposite info rather often.<\/p>\n

CBell gets the early lead. Blaney takes second from Larson who is running the inside apron.<\/p>\n

Caution on lap 264 of 301 involving Austin Dillon (3), Noah Gragson (10), Austin Cindric (2), Zane Smith (71), Darrell ‘Bubba’ Wallace (23), and Ricky Stenhouse Jr (470. Noah lost it and spun into Bubba Wallace sending him into Austin Dillon and a several cars including Erik Jones (43), John Hunter ‘JHN’ Nemechek (42) spun trying to check-up behind them.<\/p>\n

Bubba stops in front of Noah’s pit and is having words. Noah has to back up to get out of his pit stall.<\/p>\n

He drove down to his stall and sat on the wall a while. Bubba seems to be limping. He’s headed to the infield care center.<\/p>\n

PRN announces there will be a non-competitive pitstop coming and the teams will be able to change tires.<\/p>\n

The teams will have to use wet weather tires.<\/p>\n

Brett McMillan says the tires off Christopher Bell’s car show some wear, but nothing like they say in the Xfinity series yesterday.<\/p>\n

The cars are getting chassis adjustments.<\/p>\n

Restarting on lap 274 of 301 with Christopher Bell (20), Ryan Blaney (12), Kyle Larson (5), Tyler Reddick (45), Josh Berry (4), Michael McDowell (34), Chase Briscoe (14), Chris Buescher (17), Justin Haley (51) and Chase Elliott (9). Austin Dillon (3) is smoking down the track.<\/p>\n

NASCAR has a new policy for darkness. they will decide the end time then tell the teams you have one more lap to go.
\nBell takes the early lead.<\/p>\n

Caution on lap 282 of 301 for a spin by Carson Hocevar (77).<\/p>\n

Mark Garrow said it’s getting very dark at the racetrack. He said the lights on the safety vehicles are blazing because it’s so dark here.<\/p>\n

Doug Rice reiterates the darkness policy. Garrow said they will give the teams some warning. Rice agreed, maybe five minutes warning.<\/p>\n

PRN reports Cliff Daniels, Kyle Larson’s crew chief, is saying to anybody who’ll listen that it is dry enough to use the slicks. They said it’s not really a conversation with Kyle, more him saying it to anybody who will listen, hoping NASCAR will take heed. Chase Briscoe (14) said he thought he’d broken a toe-link, but it was likely the wet weather tires wearing.<\/p>\n

PRN says NASCAR says they will open pit road and teams will have the option to put on “damps”. They are saying it will also be a non-competitive stop.<\/p>\n

Rob Albright reports right rear tire of Chase Briscoe is blistered. Brett McMillan reports the right tires are pretty used up from Ryan Blaney’s car.<\/p>\n

Christopher Bell (20) wins 1.104 seconds ahead of second place.<\/p>\n

That was a long event. Until the weather approached it was a snooze-fest. After the red flag it was messy, but interesting, for a while, then the messy overtook the interesting. I’m very pleased with NASCAR’s choice to use the wet weather tires and throw a curve in the usual race event progression. I only wished no one had any experience on the wet weather tires, instead of some of the drivers gaining experience by running the Xfinity series event yesterday. I think the outcome would’ve been about the same, but I think it might’ve been a bit more interesting. Bravo NASCAR on doing something different that benefits the fans. The NBC broadcast was dreadful at the beginning of the wet weather tire period. They have trouble managing the cameras appropriately in a regular race.
