Hmmm, no NASCAR digital as they’re doing pace\/parade\/warm-up laps.<\/p>\n

Like yesterday the inside lane gets the early advantage. The outside lane is coming back toward the front. Officially Joey Logano (22) in the outside lane leads the first lap by inches.<\/p>\n

On lap 2 of 188 TV has already started the idiot camera shots; bored really early today.<\/p>\n

Logano on the outside lane has a car-length lead.<\/p>\n

The inside lane begins to advance on lap 2, then the outside pulls ahead again.<\/p>\n

Again on lap 3 – during a door-to-door battle for the lead – tv has decided to show the bumper of a car. Moronic.<\/p>\n

A third lane has formed on the outside and are making some progress toward the front.<\/p>\n

By lap 4 of 188 NASCAR digital is displaying. Hooray, since tv is insisting on showing the bumper of a car.<\/p>\n

Logano goes to the front as the third lane gets to the front. Logano ends up at the front of the middle lane. Aric ‘Afterburner’ Almirola (10) takes the lead for a bit. Logano gets back to the front.<\/p>\n

MRN’s Jeff Striegle comments on how beautiful it is to see 38 cars inches apart in three rows running side-by-side. Too bad the television folks don’t feel the same way. Maybe if they did we would be able to consistently watch it on the television broadcast.<\/p>\n

Logano (22) and Larson (5) drop to the bottom lane at the front of the field.<\/p>\n

All three lanes are door-to-door throughout the laps.<\/p>\n

The three lanes have broken down somewhat and there are now two long lanes and some three-wide action toward the back of the field on lap 15 of 188.<\/p>\n

They are back into three-wide formation throughout the field on lap 18 of 188.<\/p>\n

Green flag stops for the Fords on lap 39 of 188.<\/p>\n

The Chevrolets pit under green on lap 40 of 188.<\/p>\n

The field is two-wide as they go the final lap of the stage. A third line quickly forms and they’re three-wide headed to the green and white checkered flag.<\/p>\n

Ross Chastain (1) brings out the caution on lap 59 of 188 as he ends up the pinball in a four-wide situation. He taps the wall and loses a right front tire, but no one else is collected. Ricky Stenhouse Jr (47) leading ran out of fuel in turn three and went up the track to get out of the way. That took the group including Chastain four-wide. Chastain bounced off a couple of cars then the wall.<\/p>\n

Ryan Blaney (12) wins stage one.<\/p>\n

Stage one was enjoyable when the tv folks bothered to actually show the racing. The entire field three-wide at Talladega is a beautiful sight indeed. It is a unique spectacle, one of NASCAR’s finest.<\/p>\n

Restarting on lap 65 of 188 with Ryan Blaney and Chase Elliott on the front row. TV is showing the view out a windscreen and a driver driving. They follow that with an interview with Ross Chastain (1). Christopher Bell (20) has right front damage according to MRN. I imagine it was due to the most recent incident.<\/p>\n

Chastain (1) admits in his radio interview it was not a good idea to go four-wide at that point. Amazing, he noted the bonehead move and accepted responsibility. That’s unusual.<\/p>\n

On lap 78 of 188 the field is three-wide again.<\/p>\n

Green flag pit stops for the Toyotas on lap 104 of 188.<\/p>\n

The Fords hit pit road on lap 106 of 188.<\/p>\n

Leader ‘Desperate’ Denny Hamlin (11) has to serve a pass-thru penalty for speeding on the green flag stop.<\/p>\n

The Chevrolets pit on lap 107 of 188.<\/p>\n

Austin Cindric (2) busted for speeding will also have to serve a pass-thru penalty.<\/p>\n

On lap 118 of 188 the field has singled out up front.<\/p>\n

A second line is attempting to form on the final lap of the stage. It gets together and passes the inside lane for the lead.<\/p>\n

Brad ‘It’ Keselowski (6) wins the stage gaining the lead in the outside lane.<\/p>\n

A fuel can is on fire on pit road. It appears the fuel can was attached to Ty ‘My Grandfather is team owner Joe Gibbs’ Gibbs (54) car as he proceeded down pit road, ignited, then fell off the car.<\/p>\n

Restarting on lap 125 of 188 with Joey Logano (22) and Brad ‘it’ Keselowski (6) up front.<\/p>\n

The majority of the field was in two-wide formation until a third line formed up top on lap 138 of 188 and is motoring toward the front.<\/p>\n

Hamlin (11) is attempting to unlap himself on lap 143 of 188.<\/p>\n

On lap 145 of 188 a split-screen for a commercial break from the blimp shot so high you can barely see the cars. Back from break a 5-panel split-screen shot most of which is not discernible. I see sky and some part of a car in most of them and some part of the race in the larger one. Useless.<\/p>\n

When the terrible camera shots are on hold I really get into the race. Then my engagement is destroyed with camera angles\/shots that eliminate context and interrupts the flow of the event. This is traditionally one of my favorite races. I am very disappointed that I can only occasionally actually watch the race on the television broadcast.<\/p>\n

On lap 157 of 188 the field is either three or four-side and have been four-wide for several laps. They finally settle back into mostly two-wide with a little three-wide at the back of the field.<\/p>\n

Caution on lap 161 of 188 for a crash involving Carson Hocevar (42), Brad Keselowski (6), Austin Dillon (3), Ty Gibbs (54).<\/p>\n

Of course tv wasn’t showing it, so we’re stuck waiting for a replay. They should listen to MRN in the control room to get an idea of what to show on television<\/p>\n

Carson Hocevar got turned by ‘It’ (6) and tagged Ty Gibbs (54) who hit Austin Dillon (3) who shot up the track and hit ‘It’. It’s car caught a little air while sliding down to the infield wall. It dropped back on all four before finally coming to a stop facing the wall.<\/p>\n

Involved in the crash: Chase Briscoe, Carson Hocevar, Brad Keselowski, Austin Dillon, Harrison Burton (21), Chris Buescher (17), Michael McDowell (34), AJ Allmendinger (16).<\/p>\n

MRN says Hocevar tried to move into the front of the outside lane and due to the speed differential It had no choice but to run over Hocevar turning him.<\/p>\n

Red flag is out at 1640 eastern on lap 163 of 188. Safety team members are examining the SAFER barrier where Ty Gibbs (54) and Austin Dillon (3) pounded it. They’re welding.<\/p>\n

‘Desperate’ (11) gets the free pass to get back onto the lead lap with this caution.<\/p>\n

It has been checked and released from the infield care center. They’re loading his car onto a wrecker. It says he pushed Hocevar and he immediately spun out. He thinks his car may not have been driving well. Dave Burns asked if he gave consideration that Hocevar doesn’t have much experience. It said, “the only way to learn is to get out there and do it right?”<\/p>\n

Austin said it was a hard hit. He said the 42 was squirrelly without anyone pushing him. He said he was late moving around. “I just don’t understand. Dillon said on tv Hocevar couldn’t hold a straight line when no one was pushing him so he doesn’t know why Keselowski pushed him.<\/p>\n

Hocevar says it’s just a tough spot where the rear gets light. He said he did it in the truck race. He said he was trying to back up and lock on; sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.<\/p>\n

Ty Gibbs is very low-key. He said he got hit really hard there.<\/p>\n

Caution is out at 1652 eastern.<\/p>\n

Joey Logano (22) wins the race off pit road.<\/p>\n

Restarting on lap 168 of 188 with Aric ‘Afterburner’ Almirola (10) and Alex Bowman (48) and on the front row.<\/p>\n

They’re trying to form a third line toward the back of the field. Everybody else is two-by-two.<\/p>\n

Erik Jones (43) restarted at the tail of the field for an equipment violation penalty.<\/p>\n

Caution for debris on lap 171 of 188.<\/p>\n

66 official lead changes so far on lap 171 of 188 – the most since Oct 2011.<\/p>\n

Restarting on lap 175 of 188 with Alex Bowman (48) and Ryan Blaney (12) leading the field to the green flag.<\/p>\n

Bowman gets the early lead as the inside lane drives away from the outside lane. The outside lane is coming back to the front at the end of the lap.<\/p>\n

A third lane has formed on the outside and is moving up through the field. They’ve lost cars and momentum. We’re back two-by-two through the field.<\/p>\n

On lap 178 of 188 tv is bored again and showing fenders and blimp shots. MRN is calling an exciting race.<\/p>\n

Neither lane gets definitive advantage, so both lanes lead and fade and they continue to battle often door-to-door.<\/p>\n

Bowman (48) gets dumped in the middle on lap 181 of 188.<\/p>\n

A third line is forming, gaining members and gaining momentum on lap 183 of 188.<\/p>\n

This is so exciting! They’re racing hard since the restart.<\/p>\n

White flag at 1720 eastern with Harvick (4) and Blaney (12) at the front of the field.<\/p>\n

Blaney (12) wins by .0012 ahead of Kevin ‘KHarv\/Happy’ Harvick (4) as they crash behind them.<\/p>\n

Riley Herbst (36) turned and collected Chase Elliott (9) who was running fourth and his Elliott’s teammate Kyle Larson (5).<\/p>\n

Corey LaJoie said he shot the middle to try to get a spot and it closed up. He then hit Riley Herbst (36) who collected Chase Elliott (9), Chase Briscoe (14), Daniel Suarez (99), Darrell ‘Bubba’ Wallace (23), Alex Bowman (48), and Christopher Bell (20).<\/p>\n

That was easily the best Talladega race in a decade. They raced hard for the vast majority of the event. They were able to pass in multiple ways. They were able to compete throughout the field. A penalty did not automatically put anyone out of the event. The drivers were able to get back to the front. Various drivers were dropping out of the double-file lane and joining the third lane which allowed it to make progress through most of the event. When television would show the cars racing, it was very exciting and fun. MRN called an exciting race that allowed me to keep up with the on-track action when the television broadcast was showing bumpers, spoilers, fenders, car doors, track surface and drivers in the car driving. That race reminded me of why Talladega is my favorite race. My only wish is for a proper television broadcasting of the event. I’ve been told by a few people that it’s better to watch Talladega on television because the track is so big you can only see a little of it when you’re in the stands.<\/p>\n

After Michael ‘Bubba’ Wallace’s (23) tv interview his other team owner, Michael Jordan, walks over and chats with him. Bubba was very down. Jordan gave him a hug before walking over to shake hands with the crew.<\/p>\n
