By lap 5 of 94 the television broadcast has spent a couple of laps on the view through some car’s windshield. They’re bored early. Basically it has been almost every other lap the viewer is stuck looking at the bumper and sides of race trucks. There are three lines of trucks. The inside line is the longest and has momentum. There is a middle line that seems to be slowly losing ground to the leaders on the inside lane. Occasionally there’s a smaller third line that lost ground to the middle line and joined the back of the middle line around lap 6 of 94.<\/p>\n

Nick Sanchez (2) wins stage one.<\/p>\n

That was an orderly and rather boring stage.<\/p>\n

TV is showing video of Zane Smith sliding sideways into his pit stall and hitting his tire changer. The tire changer is still continued the stop once Zane got turned around and properly in the pit stall.<\/p>\n

So far that has been the most exciting thing that’s occurred during this race. Josh Sims is interviewing Charles Plank the tire carrier on Zane Smith’s 38 team. The truck is on pit road looking some damage on the left rear of the track.<\/p>\n

Restarting on lap 27 of 94 with Nick Sanchez (2) and Ty Majeski (98) on the front row.<\/p>\n

The 38 truck still sits on pit road as the field races. He gets going on lap 28 of 94.<\/p>\n

On lap 30 of 94 there’s a split-screen of some feet, a hood and door, and a small view of the race. There’s just not enough action on-track for the television folks. Now we’re looking at the rear-wing of a truck. Awful tv. Since I’m listening to a radio show I’m dependent on television coverage for the race at the moment. The radio show will be over soon and I will be able to listen to MRN’s broadcast and maybe get engaged with the event.<\/p>\n

Zane Smith is heading to the garage area on lap 30 of 94.<\/p>\n

Caution on lap 37 of 94 for an incident involving Stewart Friesen (52) and Tyler Ankrum (16) and David Gilliland (1). Friesen is slowly getting out of the truck. He seems injured. The truck is now smoking and the camera angles have moved to distant angles after Friesen exited the truck.<\/p>\n

Stage two ends under caution with Parker Kligerman (75) up front.<\/p>\n

There’s an ambulance near Friesen’s car. The camera angles continue to be distant, so I imagine Stewart Friesen (52) may be in the ambulance.<\/p>\n

I caught the tail end of David Gilliland’s (1) interview from the infield care center. He said he tried to give them enough room, but didn’t. Friesen hit the outside wall before ending up wrecked in the infield grass. Gilliland is out of the event. Ankrum (16) continues.<\/p>\n

MRN reports Zane Smith (38) has ‘continuing mechanical issues’.<\/p>\n

Restarting on lap 46 of 94 with Tanner Gray (15)(first) and Taylor Gray (17) (third) on the front row.<\/p>\n

The inside line gets the advantage rather quickly.<\/p>\n

Daniel Dye (43) will have to serve a pass-thru penalty for a restart violation.<\/p>\n

On lap 48 of 94 Nick Sanchez (2) takes the lead from Tanner Gray (17).<\/p>\n

Tanner Gray (15) gets the lead back on the next lap.<\/p>\n

On lap 50 of 94, during a television commercial break, caution comes out for a wreck in turn two involving Taylor Gray (17), Matt Crafton (88), Tyler Ankrum (16), and Grant Enfinger (23).<\/p>\n

The replay on television is from so far away I can’t see which truck got turned from the outside line into the inside line. Taylor Gray got turned into a truck on the inside lane, maybe Jack Wood (51), collecting Enfinger (23) collecting Matt Crafton (88), Ty Majeski (98),<\/p>\n

MRN reports at 1424 eastern that Stewart Friesen (52) is being transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.<\/p>\n

Zane Smith’s (38) truck continues to be worked on, with him sitting in it, in the garage area on lap 54 of 94.<\/p>\n

Tyler Ankrum (16) said he got hit hard in the rear and sent into the wall, bounced off and sent into the inside wall with no brakes, no steering wheel.<\/p>\n

Restarting on lap 57 of 94 with Tanner Gray (15) and Nick Sanchez (2) on the front row.<\/p>\n

The two lines are actually staying side-by-side throughout the laps.<\/p>\n

Caution on lap 59 of 94 for a spin by Bayley Currey (41) and Tyler Hill (56). Currey (41) got hit by Grant Enfinger (23) who was hit by someone on his outside. Currey turned into Hill and both spun toward the inside wall. Turns out it was Bayley Currey (41) who initially hit Alabama native Grant Enfinger (23), who then hit Currey, who lost it and collected Tyler Hill (56).<\/p>\n

Restarting on lap 6 of 94 with Alabama native Bret Holmes (32) and Nick Sanchez (2) on the front row. Sanchez gets the lead on the outside lane.<\/p>\n

Nick Sanchez (2) has to serve a pass thru penalty for a restart violation – hanging back. MRN reports NASCAR warned everyone about ‘playing games’ in the restart zone.<\/p>\n

Brett Moffitt (34) gets the inside lane going and takes it to the front of the field for the lead.<\/p>\n

They’re in a commercial split-screen using the blimp camera and a camera showing the bed-cover and wing of a truck. Seriously, do we have a blind person calling the camera shots for the event? The purpose of the split-screen on commercial breaks is to actually see the action during commercials. If the camera is too far away to see much, or worst, showing the rear wing of a truck, it completely defeats the purpose.<\/p>\n

Caution on lap 71 of 94 for Jack Wood (51) losing the hood of his truck.<\/p>\n

MRN reports Zane Smith (38) returns to the track on lap 73 of 94 at 1452 eastern.<\/p>\n

MRN reports team-owner Kyle ‘KyBu’ Busch has to sit down with Chase Purdy (4) and have a talk. Purdy was racing tentatively afraid to wreck trucks. ‘KyBu’ had to say to him it was time to go. This goes back to what I’ve been complaining about. The drivers are getting taught to be conservative and bring home the truck in the lower levels, so they never learn how to race hard and clean before they get into the upper levels.<\/p>\n

Restarting on lap 76 of 94 with Chase Purdy (4) and Chandler Smith (25) on the front row.<\/p>\n

Chase Purdy (4) does not go at the green flag and drops below the double yellow lines.<\/p>\n

Brett Moffit and Matt Crafton are racing side by side for the lead. The inside line, led by Brett Moffitt (34), races away.<\/p>\n

The engine shut off on Chase Purdy (4) when he pressed the gas on the restart. He was able to get it restarted, but has lost the draft.<\/p>\n

Caution on lap 78 of 94 for an incident involving Rajah Caruth (24) and Carson Hocevar (42). Caruth spins into the infield. Both trucks are able to continue. Hocevar gave Caruth a bad push sending him down into another truck which slapped the wall and continued on.<\/p>\n

Restarting on lap 84 of 94 with Brett Moffitt (34) at the head of the field alongside Christian Eckes (19)(third). The inside line gets the early advantage.<\/p>\n

Colby Howard (9) and Chase Purdy (4) bring out the caution on lap 85 of 94. Purdy turned Howard into the outside wall and followed him into the wall.<\/p>\n

The race has been red flagged on lap 88 of 94 for track cleanup. Purdy laid down a lot of fuel in his crash.<\/p>\n

TV goes back to the studio with Caitlyn Vincie, Todd Bodine and Larry McReynolds during extended cautions. Apparently Jamie Little isn’t capable of handling an extended period. Jamie, Phil Parsons and Michael Waltrip have no chemistry. She does not have what it takes to host a race.<\/p>\n

The yellow flag is back out and they’re rolling around the track after about five minutes.<\/p>\n

Restarting on lap 91 of 94 with Christian Eckes (19) and Brett Moffitt (34)(third) on the front row. MRN reports 26 trucks on the lead lap. The 27th truck is 12 laps down. chandler smith (19) and ben rhodes (99) on the second row. The top four are staying side-by side until the end of the lap<\/p>\n

Crash before the end of the lap as Matt Crafton (88) was turned down into the outside lane collecting Grant Enfinger (23), Greg Van Alst (20), Bret Holmes (32), Cory Roper (04), Colby Howard (9), Taylor Gray (17), Garrett Smithley (02), Rajah Caruth (24) and Jake Drew (61). Unfortunately none of the camera angles are close enough to see who turned Crafton. Tanner Gray (15), Ryan Vargas (30). Greg Van Alst (20) pounded the outside wall full-speed, head-on. The back wheels left the track. Majeski (98), Hocevar (42) also got damage in the crash. MRN says it was Nick Sanchez (2) who clipped Crafton.<\/p>\n

Red flag is out 1534 eastern on lap 92 of 94. 1541 eastern the yellow flag is out.<\/p>\n

They will restart in overtime with Brett Moffitt (34) up front.<\/p>\n

Ty Majeski (98) went to pit road. MRN’s Steve ‘Postman\/Postie’ Post reports the truck was pitting and sputtering when he tried to go out. A push truck is pushing him around the track.<\/p>\n

Brett Moffit (34), Christian Eckes (19), Chandler Smith (25), Ben Rhodes (99), Dean Thompson, Corey Heim (11) lead them to the green.<\/p>\n

Strong push on the inside line pushes Brett Moffitt t the inside line. C Smith stays on Eckes and sends him to the front.<\/p>\n

Eckes (19) takes the white flag.<\/p>\n

Eckes tries to block the outside lane, Moffitt ducks him and Eckes gets left outside and drifts backwards.<\/p>\n

Moffitt leads on the inside line.<\/p>\n

Brett Moffitt holds them all off and wins. Parker Kligerman (75) made a strong push to the front at the end, then got dumped in the middle. Dean Thompson (5) made a strong push for the win. In his radio interview Corey Heim (11) is blaming his finish on someone else. He says he could’ve raced for the win in the beginning of the interview, then changed it to he could’ve pushed ‘him’ for the win. Sure he could’ve pushed someone to the win, but I doubt he would have done so. At best he’s a whiner; at worst he’s a liar.<\/p>\n

The overtime laps were fun. They actually raced. It was the hardest racing I saw in the entire event. Hard racing for 3 of 99 laps is not a great percentage. I did see a few additional laps of racing during the event, but I would be willing to say the total was less than a dozen. Poor percentage. The third stage grew interesting as the laps wound down and they began to race with intensity. For the majority of the event they appeared to be logging laps and it was boring. Since the super speedway races are supposedly such ‘lottery’ races it might behoove NASCAR to award additional points for those races and especially for running laps in the front of the field. Not sure how that would work, but I’m going to try to work that out in my head. Overall it was okay, because of the second half of the third stage.<\/p>\n
