Sunny day with white fluffy clouds in Joliet, Illiinois. Erik ‘Da Brat’ Jones and Daniel Suarez will lead the field to green. The stages are 45-45-110 for this race.

Da Brat wins stage one.

Restarting on lap 52 of 200.

Da Brat wins stage two.

Bunny brought up a good point. Many fans complain about how boring the drivers are and how the young drivers hold no appeal. Ken Squire was in the booth one race, for a small amount of time and a driver – Erik Jones – now has a nickname and a personality to go with it – ‘That Jones Kid’. It was a name that had the fans talking – a name they remembered. No one else on the NBC broadcast has the ability to do that these days – to create a narrative about a driver or a race. It’s a clear illustration of the lack of talent in booth and the power a quality professional has to increase interest in a driver and in a race and in the sport itself.

It makes me think of watching Jeff ‘Big Daddy’ Gordon and Carl Edwards do post-race interviews. Big Daddy would often slide his sponsor mentions in so smoothly they sounded like a part of a normal conversation. Carl always sounded like a pitch man with his sponsor mentions. Both doing the same job; one had talent in that area; the other did not.

The same holds true when calling a race. A great broadcaster sounds like he’s having a good time watching a great event and the listener doesn’t notice the marketing hints dropped into the conversation because they’re relevant and subtle. The less talented sound like they’re doing a job, promoting something, and trying really, really hard to make the viewer believe something. The folks on the broadcasts – both FOX and NBC – doing the former are a tiny minority. Broadcasting is not an easy job and requires a lot of talent and even more work.

I’ve not seen anyone put in the work needed to improve since Nicole Briscoe. She went from a person on the desk for her looks, to a one of the best broadcasters in motorsports. Her behind the scenes work was reflected in her rapid on-air growth. Since Nicole, it seems everyone who is given the position is under the impression their level of work is actually great. Just like gaining a Cup ride isn’t indicative of the level of talent, ability, stamina, professionalism, nor future success of a driver; getting an on-air spot should be the very beginning of a broadcaster’s work toward earning that spot and earning the position of ‘authority on the sport’.

Most of the folks on most of the broadcasts sound like they’re selling themselves and their co-hosts and neglecting the race. What I find most bizarre about that is the number of them who are trying desperately to convince the artist they’re funny. If this were a comedy show I might be able to understand the sad attempts at humor. It isn’t and I don’t. If the racing is so boring it requires shtick, the on-track action needs a serious overhaul. Gimmicks and gags won’t do the trick.

Restarting on lap 96 of 200.

‘Da Brat’ and Ryan ‘Son’ Blaney got busted for speeding on their pit stops. So the first and third place cars restart at the tail end of the lead lap.

Green flag pit stops underway with 59 laps to go.

Blake Koch, Brennan Poole and Dakoda Armstrong got popped for speeding during that round of pit stops.

Caution on lap 150 of 200 for a spin by Brandon Jones.

Restarting on lap 154 of 200.

With 31 laps remaining this has been a typically boring Chicago race. Looking at the shots of the stands, I don’t understand how this track keeps a race. Bunny and I were discussing the tracks the series, and the truck series, used to race. They were more appropriate for the vehicles and usually provided exciting racing. Each series needs their own identity and their own schedule. The more exciting and entertaining races this season have been the stand-alone races in the Xfinity series.

The Truck Series needs to end its run as the pre-K for the Xfinity series. When the Truck Series had regular, seasoned drivers competing every week the action was hot. There were drivers to cheer for and rivalries that carried-over from season to season. The races mattered. Now it seems to be an audition for other series for the drivers and a training ground for the crews and none of them seem to actually care about the series, the racing, nor the races.

Caution on lap 179 of 200 for a spin by Daniel Suarez.

Apparently ‘Kutey’ Kyle Larson left the pits too quickly.

William Byron is calling it a day.

Restarting on lap 185 of 200.

Ooops, Ryan Blaney got damage as Erik Jones lost it and wandered up in to Blaney crunching him into the wall and has lots of tire smoke. Cole Custer ran into the back of Blaney when he was bouncing on the wall.

Just ‘Dewy Alligator’ Allgaier takes the lead followed by Elliott Sadler.

Caution for a spin by Ryan Reed on lap 188 of 200. Reed lost it and tapped Darrell ‘Bubba’ Wallace who was able to keep going. Look like Brennan Poole might have gotten a little bit of that.

Restarting on lap 193 of 200.

Erik Jones busted for a restart violation. He pulled out of line and passed Elliott Sadler before the start-finish line.

Justin Allgaier wins!!! His second win of the season. He’s from Illinois as is his sponsor.

Elliott Sadler is doing a burn-out to celebrate being the regular season championship. Congrats to him on his third place finish.

Darrell ‘Bubba’ Wallace finished tenth. Not bad.

Steve O’Donnell is presenting Elliott the ‘first-ever’ Xfinity Series Regular Season Championship trophy.

The Xfinity Series Play-off Field:

William Byron

Justin Allgaier

Elliott Sadler

Daniel Hemric

Brennan Poole

Ryan Reed

Jeremy Clements

Cole Custer

Blake Koch

Matt Tifft

Brendan Gaughan

Michael Annett

NASCAR News:

Don’t count Jimmie Johnson out in his pursuit of record 8th NASCAR Cup championship.

First Playoffs for Blaney, Stenhouse Jr..

Ganassi Duo Ready for Playoffs.

Kyle Busch Captures Chicagoland Pole.

Kyle Busch, Keselowski Twitter Battle.

No Decision Yet for Almirola.

Wallace’s Future Still Not Clear.

Truex Jr. Rides High into Playoffs.

Kyle Busch Not The Title Favorite.

NASCAR Playoffs 101.

Johnson Counting on Autumn Turnaround.

Kyle Busch Gets New Pit Crew.

Opinion: Cars Need More Stars.

NASCAR Fines Three Crew Chiefs.

Patrick Not Returning to SHR in 2018.

NASCAR Notebook: Questions for RPM, SHR.

Smithfield Foods to Join SHR;
