Lamentation for the Loss of Trackside Live

Once upon a time there was a show called Trackside Live on Speed.  It was nicknamed “Friday Night House Party”.  Weekly, during NASCAR season, the crew would gather, Byrnesy (Steve Byrnes), DW(Darrelll Waltrip), Hollywood(Jeff Hammond), Ell-yut(Elliott Sadler) and the guests and talk about the upcoming race, practices, the track, the drivers, the garage, the weather, and anything else relevant to that particular week’s contest.  Several drivers would show up and plug something and generally shoot the sh*t with the guys.  I looked forward to it.  It was appointment television. The 2012 NASCAR Season is FINALLY underway!

FINALLY!!! It’s been an endless winter without NASCAR.  I typically spend a lot of hours each week with the television tuned to SpeedTV watching NASCAR coverage.  For the past couple of months, I’ve been without NASCAR practice, qualifying and racing.  It’s been very sad.  But that’s all over now!  The NASCAR season is officially underway.

Yesterday’s ARCA race was delightful as usual.  I’ve quickly grown to love ARCA races.  With the exception of the Dillon boys bringing their big bucks, it is delightful to watch good drivers learn in a relatively equal field.  It is always lovely to see women in the field, though it is beyond me how Milka Duno keeps getting a ride.  At this point I question her ability to drive a point home.  She’s a nightmare on the track weekly.  But the race was fun and the ending was memorable.  I am concerned Brandon McReynolds is going to continue the trend of  ‘sons of’ pressing their unfair advantages and killing some of the fun of the ARCA series.  It was a relief that a deserving winner ended up in Victory Circle yesterday.  Quite a fulfilling win.  The Dillon brothers left me with very few fulfilling wins last year. 2010 Fall Kansas Sunday

So the ESPN Kansas broadcast started out in typical NASCAR on ESPN fashion – the Countdown show had video, but no audio. Yesterday’s Countdown show wasn’t shown, as usual, due to a college football game. It is a mystery to me that I see a zillion ESPN channels in the channel guide, but regularly at the scheduled time for Countdown I’m stuck watching some other sporting event. Now interestingly at race time there was a notification at the bottom of the screen that the race would be broadcast on ESPN Classic. It seems to me that it would be a better idea to schedule the race on a channel that does not have something else scheduled during that time, and have a plan B that is announced early when problems arise. When I checked ESPN Classic a few hours before the race the channel guide indicated that it was a channel that was not a part of my cable package. That’s unacceptable. It doesn’t really matter if it is or is not. NASCAR is a sport of the people and should be readily available to the people. I wish they would put it back on ABC or ESPN should have a channel dedicated to motorsports, or dedicated to programming which conflicts with current broadcasts – basically a dedicated overflow channel. 2010 Fall Dover Sunday

Jimmie Wins!!! Jimmie had a great points day, leading laps, started on pole, won the race. Jimmie has led 35 of the last 40 Chase races. Burton finished second. Jimmie has won 19 of the 62 Chase races that have been run.

The race was okay. They would string out pretty quickly and had lots of long green flag runs. Most of the pit stops were green flag pit stops. Clint Bowyer had a miserable day and finished several laps down. Continue reading “2010 Fall Dover Sunday”
