Kyle Larson (5) wins stage one.

Kyle Larson (5) wins stage two by 1.8 seconds, leading 211 of 250 laps.

PRN reports Kyle Larson has led 377 of 468 laps so far and there’s been one caution for cause.

Turned to the race with on lap 470 of 500. I tried earlier, but every time I turned to the race I was looking at a hood, the track surface, bumpers, the wall, and other shots that are not visually engaging and do not provide insight into what is going on in the race. I have to change on lap 490 of 500 because they got stuck with a weird shot that was making me nauseous. I will check back to see if they get outside and away from the cars. The ultra-close-up shots are awful.

Kyle Larson (5) easily wins by 2.250 seconds. Larson led 411 of 500 laps.

Jon Edwards of Hendrick Motorsports died earlier this week. Larson’s crew-chief Cliff Daniels said the win was for Jon Edwards who was – according to PRN – most recently Larson’s PR person, having had the role with Jeff Gordon for 30 years previously.

On Master’s Sunday I chose to watch golf since it was much more visually engaging and more exciting than looking at hoods, bumpers, the wall, the sides of cars, and the track surface. When I listened to the radio broadcast they seemed to indicate there wasn’t much going on that was particularly exciting. They said they expected the race to be more like last year’s Fall race and it was more like last year’s Spring race (or vice-versa). I understood that to mean they expected it to be an exciting race and it wasn’t. The constant gimmick shots reinforced that interpretation of their commentary.

I would like NASCAR to offer viewers the opportunity to view the race from 100% outside the car. Years ago they used to have an option called Race Buddy that allowed the viewer to choose how they wanted to view the race – including from outside the cars (what I consider a standard view), from selected driver-cams, from a few different points on the track, following the lead, or following the hottest battle on track. I spent many happy hours watching Race Buddy during those times since it allowed me to avoid the awful audio on the television broadcast at the time, as well as avoid the gimmick shots, to see what I wanted to see, what I found most engaging. It was a nice feature until it wasn’t as it was ‘new & improved’ and totally ruined. Since the people choosing the video seem not remotely interested in actually broadcasting the on-track racing, and the gimmick and toy (drone) shots trigger my car sickness, I need an alternative view. The MRN radio broadcasts used to be superio
r to the television broadcasts. The retirement of announcer Jeff Striegle and the delay in the feed for all races has reduced the value of the broadcast for me. The MRN broadcast used to be aligned with nascar.com and a second or two ahead of the television broadcast. It was ideal. Now it tends to be a lap or more behind the television broadcast and the lead announcer is learning the ropes slowly. I would prefer to watch the race outside the cars, but from a reasonable height, without dizzying spins and swoops. NASCAR help me see great racing on the NASCAR broadcasts.
