MRN is calling an exciting race with a battle for the lead. NBC/CW is showing an event with nothing going on on-track. We see the view of the wall from a driver’s windscreen along with a shot of the steering wheel and a driver driving. I’d like to see the race MRN is calling on television, instead of only in my imagination.
On lap 181 of 200 NBC shows the view outside the car for about a quarter lap. Then they shot goes very far away making it impossible to determine which cars are in the shot. Then back to the split-screen of the wall and the steering wheel. Momentarily outside the car the battle for the lead, then back to the view of the wall and the steering wheel.
MRN reports that Aric Almirola (20) is approaching the battle for the lead as Chandler Smith (81) tries to keep Cole Custer (00) behind him through lapped traffic.
Outside the car it’s a blimp shot – relatively distant, but close enough to see the colors of the cars to determine who we’re watching – as Custer (00) gets past Smith (81) on lap 190 of 200. Almirola (20) passes Smith for second position.
On lap 192 of 200 MRN reports Corey Heim (26) may be out of fuel on the apron of the track.
Heim coasts onto pit road on lap 194 of 200.
The leaders have caught lapped traffic on lap 196 of 200 as Custer attempts to keep Almirola behind him.
Almirola passes Custer on lap 197 of 200.
Almirola takes the white flag.
Aric ‘Afterburner’ Almirola (20) holds off Cole Custer (00) to win 0.226 seconds ahead.
Riley Herbst (98) seems to be stalking Austin Hill (21) on pit road as Almirola (20) does the burnout.
Hill hops out of the car immediately on stopping on pit road. Herbst takes his time getting out of his car.
Cole Custer has a conversation with Chandler Smith about Smith driving him into the fence. He says he’s tired of Smith driving into him and that he told him if he (Smith) races him (Custer) like a clown he’s (Custer) going to race him (Smith) like a clown. He saes he wasn’t even clear and just drove into him. Cole says, “It’s a joke”.
Smith (81) says he did what he needed to do to win the thing. He says he held Custer (00) up for quite a few laps. Smith says if it would’ve been the regular season he might have given him (Custer) a little bit.
Riley Herbst (98) goes over and talks with Austin Hill (21).
Sammy Smith (8) – according to NBC – and AJ Allmendinger (16) have an animated conversation. NASCAR Digital says that Sam Mayer (1) and AJ Allmendinger (16) had a conversation.
Austin Hill (21) actually admitted that he was in the wrong with Riley Herbst (98). He said he wanted to let him know he’s sorry and sorry doesn’t cut it. He said they get along really well on and off the track. He said he told him “if you have one coming for me I totally understand I got one coming”. He said he was looking in the mirror and when he looked around he saw he wasn’t going to clear Riley. Hill went on to say “of anyone Riley is the last person [I] would want to do that to because [we] work well together and [I’m] looking forward to working with him next week at Talladega even though he’s in a Ford and [I’m] in a Chevy.
