The NTT IndyCar Series returns to Nashville Superspeedway, after a 16 year absence, to determine the 2024 champion during the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix. Six-time IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon is the last driver to reach victory lane at the track, winning in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Reigning series champ, Alex Palou, and former champ, Will Power, will battle for their third championship.
I forgot to check the start time of the Cup race and happened to change to the channel during a boring segment of the IndyCar pre-race show. Imagine my surprise seeing the cars rolling around Watkins Glen, then crashing. So I’m going to attempt to watch both events until one of them ends and I can watch one.
The field takes the green flag under mostly cloudy skies.
Hmmm, I think I’m going to listen to the call on IndyCar radio. They’re doing a triple split-screen of the NASCAR race on lap 5 of 208 so I’m seeing the steering wheel, front wheels and cowling of a car, a distant shot of the front of the field and a car driving. NBC coverage sucks!
Will Power’s seatbelts are loose so they’re having to tighten them on pit road during his first stop. He’s already two laps down on lap 17 of 208. He said on his radio “my belt has come off. The belt is unclipped.” He’s five laps down when he returns to the track.
Felix Rosenquist swipes the wall on lap 55 of 206 and brings out the caution. Leader and pole-sitter Kyle Kirkwood was putting the field down a lap quickly. He had lapped up to twelfth position last I heard.
Currently I’m listening to and watching the IndyCar race. It’s more interesting so far. I swap to MRN intermittently to try to keep up with the NASCAR race during commercial breaks or lulls (moments where the field seems settled in) in the IndyCar race.
NBC did a shot toward the city of Nashville then panned back to the track and I saw rain in the distance in one area covered. Everybody is saying Will Power lost the championship with the seatbelt issue.
Restarting on lap 68 of 206 with Josef Newgarden and Colton Herta at the front of the field.
Marcus Ericsson tagged the wall on lap 136 of 206 bringing out the caution. Apparently something broke on the car sending him into the wall – a light side-swipe.
Restarting on lap 148 of 206 with Pato O’ward, Josef Newgarden, David Malukas, Colton Herta and Kyle Kirkwood up front.
On lap 158 of 206 several cars are in fuel-save mode under sunnier skies.
Josef Newgarden was unhappy losing laps while on the fuel-save mode so his team decided to bring him in since they determined they were going to make their fuel number anyway.
Linus Lundqvist is apparently the rookie of the year. Officially he doesn’t know what he’s doing next year, but apparently it’s an open secret where he’s going. Alexander Rossi has said he won’t return to Arrow-McLaren but hasn’t announced where he will be in 2025.
Colton Herta takes the lead from Pato O’Ward on lap 201 of 206.
Colton Herta takes the white flag.
Colton Herta wins. He finishes second in the IndyCar championship. It’s the first time he’s won on an oval.
Congrats to Josef Newgarden on coming back to finish third.
Alex Palou wins the 2024 IndyCar Series championship. This is his third championship.
Honda wins the manufacturer’s championship.
Colton Herta lives in Nashville.
Andretti Global won the IndyNxt race and the IndyCar race. this weekend.
This is the first time IndyCar has run Nashville Speedway since 2008. The IndyCar radio guys say the event was a success and they expect it to continue to get better.
Next race St. Petersburg – March 2025.
