Cars in field: 38
Pole: Connor Zilisch (88)
Outside Pole: Ty Gibbs (19)
Stages: 20-20-42
Weather: Partly sunny, 88°F, Feels like (sun) 95°, Feels like (shade) 89°, Wind NE 3 mph, Wind Gusts 6 mph
Connor Zilisch (88) gets the early lead.
Some folks pit under green, some stay out, including race leader Connor Zilisch (88).
The MRN guys are questioning why Zilisch stayed out and will win the stage when he’s not racing for points, but his teammate Justin Allgaier (7) would win a championship-playoff point for winning the stage and Zilisch would pit on the same cycle as the cars he was racing.
Connor Zilisch (88) easily wins stage one 10.823 seconds ahead on second place.
Restarting on lap 24 of 82 with Ty Gibbs (19) and AJ Allmendinger (16) up front as some teams pit and some stay out.
AJ Allmendinger (16) gets the early lead.
William ‘WilliB’ Byron (17) gets the lead from Allmendinger (16) on lap 29 of 82.
Some pit, some stay out on lap 37 of 82.
William ‘WilliB’ Byron (17) wins stage two 3.483 seconds ahead of second place.
Aric ‘Afterburner’ Almirola (20) is sitting on pit road on lap 41 of 82. NBCSports reports he said he’s lost third and fourth gear.
Thomas Annunziata (35) has been helped out of the car and taken tot he infield care center. He looked faint on the back of the golf cart. NBCSports reports he doesn’t have a cool-suit and his air-host was reportedly coming off. Burton says Annunziata drives in the Trans-Am series and he says the Trans-Am cars are hot, so he’s suprised to see him having these issues.
Restarting on lap 44 of 82 with WilliB (17) and Ty ‘MyGrandfatherIsTeamOwnerJoeGibbs’ Gibbs (19) on the front row.
Gibbs (19) gets the early lead.
On lap 44 of 82 Justin Allgaier (7) and Mike Skeen (87) spin off into the gravel pit. Skeen keeps the car rolling and drives out. Allgaier says he’s stuck.
Caution is out on lap 45 of 82 for the stuck Justin Allgaier (7).
MRN reports the top three cars Ty Gibbs (19), Sam Mayer (1), Connor Zilisch (88) did not go through the inner-loop, instead they drove straight. They also did not stop to serve a penalty and all will start at the tail end of the field on the next restart.
Sam Mayer (1) said on the radio on the NBC broadcast that he thought they could ignore the inner-loop under caution which makes no sense.
Restarting on lap 49 of 82 with Cole Custer (00) and William Byron (17) up front.
Cole Custer (00) get the early lead.
WilliB (17) takes the lead on lap 50 of 82.
WilliB makes his scheduled pit stop on lap 53 of 82 and Shane ‘SVG’ Van Gisbergen (97) inherits the lead.
Green flag pit stops continue on lap 54 of 82.
On lap 54 of 82 NBCSports showed Ryan Sieg (39) spinning off-course, but continuing. Not sure when that happened. It seemed they were continuously talking during that time so I don’t know if any of that babble included what caused Sieg to spin.
Joey Gase (35) is reportedly driving the car Thomas Annuziata was in.
“Ed Jones from Dubai”, Alex Hayden of MRN. I thought that was the same Englishman Ed Jones that races in IndyCar.
On lap 5 of 82 Ed Jones (25) apparently said he cool suit wasn’t working and he’s suffering in the car on lap 57 of 82 according to MRN.
On lap 60 of 82 Ed Jones came (25) in for a scheduled pit stop and stalled the car.
Steve ‘Postman/Postie’ Post of MRN reports on lap 65 of 82 that the 88 team is wearing Connor Zilisch (88) out on the radio about his lap times. They believe they need about a lap of fuel-saving and he’s laying down very fast time.
On lap 66 of 82 William Byron pits under green for what he called a ‘massive vibration’.
Leader Shane ‘SVG’ Van Gisbergen (97) pits on lap 66 of 82.
Connor Zilisch (88) inherits the lead.
NBCSports it spending endless time showing the track surface and hood from SVG’s windscreen. BORING video. Makes a boring event more boring. SVG has to serve a penalty to speeding on pit entry.
Sheldon Creed (18) pits for fuel on lap 74 of 82.
On lap 76 of 82 Dave Mood reports Matt ‘MattiD’ DiBenedetto (38) has blown up. He’s come to a stop in the bus stop.
Caution on lap 76 of 82.
NBCSports was showing video of the car before MattiD (38) stopped and fire was clearly visible under the rear-end of the car.
Restarting on lap 80 of 82 with Connor Zilisch (88), Ty Gibbs (19), AJ Allmendinger (16), Brandon Jones (9), Sam Mayer (1), Chandler Smith (81), Sheldon Creed (18), Jeremy Clements (51), Jeb Burton (27), and Riley Herbst (98) up front.
Connor Zilisch (88) gets the early lead as cars spin on the restart.
Caution on lap 80 of 82for Austin Hill (21) sitting heavily damaged on the track. Anthony ‘FastPasta’ Alfredo (5) continued smoking around the track. William Byron (17) reportedly was also involved in it.
On lap 81 of 84 the field is stopped on the front-stretch. Red flag is out at 1716 eastern.
NBCSports’ Steve Letarte said he doesn’t understand why NASCAR has the field stopped. MRN’s Alex Hayden says there’s fluid all over the track causing the red flag.
Fuel seems to be a concern for everybody besides Chandler Smith (81).
According to MRN Zilisch and Allmendinger were slowing the field in preparation for the red flag and were passed by Sam Mayer, Ty Gibbs, and Chandler Smith. MRN said NASCAR was shuffling the field to put Zilisch and Allmendinger back at the front of the field. nascar.com continues to show Sam Mayer, Ty Gibbs, and Chandler Smith ahead of them. They’re also reporting Jeremy Clements in tenth position, so I’m curious to see what we have momentarily. MRN says Jeb Burton has gotten a push to the garage area and has gotten out of his car.
TV is showing a fan in the grandstands dancing badly and a guy riding his dinosaur in the infield (he’s wearing a costume dinosaur with legs and his legs are inside the suit in the dino’s legs, so it appears he’s riding the dinosaur. Then they are showing a girl dancing badly and a boy she pretended to punch in the face seemingly when he commented on her dancing.
1737 engines have re-fired according to MRN.
1738 the caution flag is out and the cars are rolling.
NBC is showing Zilisch (88) and Allmendinger (16) leading as they drive around under caution.
There are still safety trucks on the track cleaning up speedi-dry.
nascar.com has shuffled the line up on lap 82 of 85.
Restarting in overtime on lap 83 of 85 with Connor Zilisch (88), AJ Allmendinger (16), Sam Mayer (1), Ty Gibbs (19), Chandler Smith (81), Sheldon Creed (18), Brandon Jones (9), Jeb Burton (27), Shane Van Gisbergen (97), Parker Kligerman (48) at the front of the field.
Connor Zilisch gets the early lead.
Ty Gibbs appears to be out of fuel. His car comes to a stop on-track.
Brandon Jones (9) spins through the grass and back onto the track in front of Mike Skeen (87).
Caution on lap 83 of 85.
On lap 85 of 88 MRN’s Dave Moody and Kyle Rickey are calling the caution lap due to the fuel concerns. Kyle Rickey says more fluid was put down in the Brandon Jones incident and there are safety trucks mopping it up during this caution period.
Dave ‘Godfather’ Moody (MRN) and Mike ‘BagMan/Baggie’ Bagley (NBC) are reporting fluid on the track in turn four which will likely lengthen this caution period.
Jeremy Clements (51) pits for fuel on lap 85 of 88 according to MRN.
Restarting in overtime on lap 88 of 90 with rookie Connor Zilisch (88), Sam Mayer (1), AJ Allmendinger (16), Chandler Smith (81), Shane ‘SVG’ Van Gisbergen (97), Sheldon creed (18), Parker Kligerman (48), Ross Chastain (92), Riley Herbst (98), and Jesse Love (2) up front.
Wreck in the back as Connor Zilisch (88) gets the early lead and SVG (97) and AJ (16) are battling door to door for second.
Sam Mayer (1) may have run out of fuel he has disappeared from the top five.
Connor Zilisch takes the white flag
SVG crashes as white flag is taken.
Custer (00) goes around.
Allgaier (7) spins out in the bus stop.
Mayer (1) spins out.
Riley Herbst (98) spins in front of the field and gets hit by the 44 and another car. There were several involved in that crash, but lots of dust and smoke obscure the camera view, and it’s not a great shot of the cars – distant, so I can see the car numbers.
Another car hits the wall – Ryan Sieg (39) and Ed Jones (26).
The caution comes out on the final lap due to the crash.
Sheldon Creed (18) is riding alongside Zilisch (88) under caution heading toward the checkered flag.
18-year-old Connor Zilisch (88) wins in his first appearance in the Xfinity series for JR Motorsports.
Only the overtime restarts were worth watching and unfortunately a lot happened, but the NBC viewer saw and heard about very little of it live and only showed one replay that didn’t really capture all of the missed action. Boring television coverage. Boring race.
