2024 NASCAR Cup Series Race Fourteen Charlotte

Cars in field: 40
Pole: Ty Gibbs (54)
Outside Pole: William Byron (24)
Stages: 100-100-100-100
Weather: Mostly cloudy, 83°F, Feels like: 90°, Wind SSW 2 mph, Gusts 3 mph

Conclusion of Indy500 vs Start of Coke 600? Indy500.

Xfinity series driver Justin Allgaier (5) is in the 5 car for Kyle Larson, as Larson flies back from the Indy 500.

Caution on lap 170 of 400 for a spin by Noah Gragson (10) into the inside wall.

Caution on lap 196 of 400 for Harrison Burton (21) spinning out.

Stage two ends under caution as the pace car brings the field down pit road and stops for the moment of remembrance. Christopher ‘CBell’ Bell (20) wins stage two.

FoxSports is showing the weather radar at 2057 and there appears to be storms with a lot of lightning headed toward the racetrack.

Restarting with “CBell” (20) and Willie “WilliB” Byron (24) on the front row on lap 206 of 400.

Caution on lap 228 of 400 for a spin by Corey LaJoie (7).

2124 PRN reports lightning flashes in the distance.

Caution on lap 244 of 400 for precipitation as the helicopter carrying Larson is landing. PRN’s Doug Rice is describing the precipitation as a ‘slight shower’. PRN’s retiring Doug Rice says, “it’s almost unpreceptable from our location”.

The red flag has been displayed.

Larson has his HANS device on and is waiting for the red flag to be lifted. PRN’s Doug Rice is now saying, “If we haven’t already lost the track, we will in a few minutes”. He reported that a lightning strike within eight miles was the reason for the caution. The crews covered the cars almost immediately which indicated to me that heavier rain was arriving soon. At 2151 PRN’s Rice says, “It’s monsoonal here now”.

2156 Doug Rice says, “We’ve just restarted the lightning hold”, so it will be at least an additional 30 minutes. He said last week in North Wilkesboro, he was saying he had never seen that much rain, but he thinks this rain is giving the North Wilkesboro rain a run for its money .

PRN reports at 2228 NASCAR has brought out the Elgin machine and they have called for the jet dryers and the Toyota Tundra jet drying team out. Doug Rice said he stepped outside and the rain has stopped, but they are continuing to see lightning. They’re being told NASCAR is trying to dry the track now. He says at the most optimistic it is at least an hour and a half to dry the track. The lightning hold continues. They report some of the fans have returned to the grandstands. He advised them to be safe with what’s going on out here. They are turning it over to local stations and will return at 2330 eastern.

FOXSports reports at 2239 that they continue to see lightning in the distance as the jet-dryers circle the track.

At 2330 The Coca-Cola 600 is called official. FOXSport’s Mike Joy explained they attempted to dry the track and have made little progress. Since it appears it would take several hours to dry it, then complete the race, NASCAR decided to call the race and declare leader Christopher ‘CBell’ Bell (20) the winner. Mike Joy mentioned that they’re looking for Christopher Bell (20) at Victory Lane and the camera saw him headed that way. He said he had already gotten himself ready in his head to go back racing, and was watching television in his bus, “about half asleep”, when he saw Mike, Kevin, and Clint in the booth and he wondered what was going on and heard them say the race was official and his phone went off with someone saying they called it. He seemed very excited to win. He said on his radio interview he’s hearing boos out there – he wanted to go back to racing too. He said he “was fully, mentally, prepared to go back to racing”.

What I saw was pretty boring. I was kind of hoping they would either call the race, or conclude it tomorrow. After that exciting Indy500 I wasn’t in the mood for probably 140 laps of boring racing and likely crap television coverage, then, maybe, if we were lucky, 8 laps of legit racing.

PRN says because the track was so wet it was going to be 0100, at the earliest, before they restarted the race. They also made Justin Allgaier (5) subbing for Kyle Larson their driver of the race for bringing that car home in 13th position. Lightning continues in the area. Doug Rice did not get to call the finish of his final Coca-Cola 600. He was the honorary pace-car driver today.
