On lap 1 of 109 Kyle ‘KyBu’ Busch (8) is crab-walking around the track after getting his car restarted following heavy contact with the outside wall. PRN reports he has a broken rear toe-link.
Green flag pit stops take place around lap 15 of 109 and continue as the stage end draws near on lap 23 of 109.
Shane ‘SVG’ Van Gisbergen (88) is 6.053 seconds ahead of second position on lap 23 of 109.
SVG is 7.353 seconds ahead of second position on lap 24 of 109.
PRN is reporting that crew chief Cliff Daniels told driver Kyle Larson (5) how many points they needed to lock in to the next round. At a certain point during stage one Daniels reportedly said he thought they had achieved the points and PRN says the crew members were high-fiving.
Shane ‘SVG’ Van Gisbergen (88) wins stage one 8.270 seconds ahead of second position.
On lap 33 of 109 Austin Cindric (2) got Carson Hocevar’d (77) and went for a spin.
Ryan Blaney (12) wins stage two by 3.765 seconds.
The third stage starts and the PRN crew are losing their minds. While they are racing for the lead, the hysteria in their voices are way over the top, especially with 50+ laps remaining in the race.
Caution on lap 58 of 109 likely for Austin Dillon (3) getting hard into the tire barrier.
White flag for Shane ‘SVG’ Van Gisbergen (88).
Shane ‘SVG’ Van Gisbergen (88) wins 15.160 seconds ahead of second position.
Ross Chastain (1) tries to dump ‘Desperate’ Denny Hamlin (11) and spins out along with Hamlin. Chastain then backs up across the finish line as Joey Logano (22) passes Chastain. Logano makes it into the next round of the Playoffs with that pass.
Hamlin says he didn’t know about the point situation. He said no one told him and he wished he would’ve known.
The fans in the stands are booing Joey Logano (22) when he begins his television interview.
Hamlin says on television he wished he would’ve known so he “could’ve been prepared or make a different decision”. He said he was racing for around 18th with the intention of gaining a position to look better on the qualifying metric for next week.
Chase Briscoe said it was ‘good enough’. He said he wasn’t his ‘usual aggressive self’. He went on to say it is so easy to get caught up in other people’s stuff, dive-bombing,” he was “just trying to stay out of trouble”.
This event was boring. Most of the field appeared to be trying to stay out of trouble which made for a boring event with occasional spurts of racing action. The result, a win by Shane Van Gisbergen, was very satisfying. Joey Logano advancing into the next round as a result of Chastain spinning himself out while trying to spin out Denny Hamlin was also very satisfying. Cup racing at the Roval sucks overall. It is a boring event in general and as a cut-off race it is worse because most of the field will drive conservatively to either avoid wrecking, or to avoid interfering with Playoff contenders.
