Cars in field: 38
Pole: Shane Van Gisbergen (97)
Outside Pole: Sam Mayer (1)
Stages: 20-20-27
Weather: Sunny, 78°F, Feels like (sun) 81°, Feels like (shade) 76°, Wind WSW 3 mph, Wind Gusts 4 mph
Sam Mayer (1) gets the early lead. NBC’s Jeff Burton says NASCAR is going to be looking at that to see if Mayer jumped the start and crossed the line before Shane ‘SVG’ Van Gisbergen (97). NASCAR determined Sam Mayer made a start violation and will need to serve a pass-through penalty.
On lap 1 of 67 Kyle Sieg (39) spins. He gets it headed in the correct direction and continues.
AJ Allmendinger (16) wins stage one.
Restarting on lap 24 of 67 with Josh Bilicki (19), and Chandler Smith (81), Sam Mayer (1), Aric ‘Afterburner’ Almirola (20), and Parker Kligerman (48) up front. Bilicki gets a clean start and the early lead.
Alex Labbe (91) spins out on lap 24 of 67, gets it turned around and continues.
Caution on lap 26 of 67 for debris.
Restarting on lap 29 of 67 with Josh Bilicki (19), Chandler Smith (81), Sam Mayer (1), Aric ‘Afterburner’ Almirola (20), and Parker Kligerman (48) still up front. Bilicki again gets the early lead.
Caution on lap 30 of 67 for Matt ‘MattiD’ DiBenedetto (38) spinning out. I’m not sure why that warrants a caution when the other cars seem to get around the 38 without difficulty.
Restarting on lap 32 of 67 Josh Bilicki (19), Sam Mayer (1), Chandler Smith (81), Parker Kligerman (48), Aric Almirola (20) at the front of the field. Bilicki (19) gets a clean start, but Sam Mayer takes over the lead in turn three.
Caution on lap 33 of 67 for Riley Herbst (98) causing a multi-car crash off the front bumper of Anthony ‘FastPasta’ Alfredo (5) collecting Ryan Sieg (28), Parker Retzlaff (31), Josh Williams (11), Blaine Perkins (29), Sheldon Creed (18), Preston Pardus (50), Brennan Poole (44), Dylan Lupton (15), Brad Perez (45) and Ed Jones (26). PRN reports Brennan Poole, Ed Jones (26), Josh Williams are out of the event.
Restarting on lap 37 of 67 with Justin Allgaier (7), Sage Karam (07), Ryan Sieg (28), Leland Honeyman (42), Jeremy Clements (51), Kyle Sieg (39), Nathan Byrd (14), Connor Mosack (88), Brad Perez (45) – all of whom stayed out – leading the field to the green flag.
Justin Allgaier gets the early lead.
On lap 37 of 67 Sheldon Creed (18) is creeping and smoking around the track on the apron. NBCSports reports Creed said on the radio that he’s blowing up.
On lap 38 of 67 NBCSports reports Riley Herbst (98) said something broke.
The caution comes out on lap 39 of 67 as Sheldon Creed’s car comes to a stop. Herbst continues to smoke his way around the apron to pit road.
Justin Allgaier (7) wins stage two under caution.
NBCSports’ Steve Letarte is confused as to why Riley Herbst (98) is not on the damaged vehicle clock for his trackbar issue and is instead in the garage making repairs.
Restarting on lap 43 of 67. Connor Mosack (88), Sam Mayer (1), Sage Karam (07), Aric Almirola (20), Jeremy Clements (51), AJ Allmendinger (16), Shane Van Gisbergen (97), Chandler Smith (81) are at the head of the field. Mosack (88) gets the early lead.
On lap 45 of 67 Sam Mayer (1) takes the lead as Aric Almirola (2) spins out as does Jeremy Clements (51).
PRN reports Riley Herbst (98) will have to serve a pass-thru penalty when he returns to the track from his garage repairs because he sped onto pit road.
Caution on lap 52 of 67 for Thomas Annunziata (35) into the tire barrier due to brake failure.
Restarting on lap of 67 with Shane ‘SVG’ Van Gisbergen (97), Austin Green (32), Jesse Love (2), Preston Pardus (50) and Parker Kligerman (48) up front. SVG gets the early lead.
On lap 56 of 67 a bunch of cars spun and were sitting around and across the track including Connor Mosack (88). The race stays green.
On lap 58 of 67 Parker Kligerman (48) has caught leader SVG and is staying on his bumper.
Kligerman (48) passes SVG (97) on turn seven of lap 58 of 67.
Sam Mayer (1) passes SVG at the end of lap 58 of 67.
On lap 63 of 67 Mayer passes Kligerman for the lead. Kligerman passes him back in the next turn.
Leland Honeyman (42) is under the tire barrier and the caution comes out after the white flag waves.
NBCSports says the caution lights came on prior to the white flag. NASCAR is saying he didn’t get to the white flag before the flag came out. The replay shows that the white flag waves and the car crossed the line prior to the time of caution. They’re saying it’s based on the timestamp of the lights and that there’s a delay between pushing the button and when the lights actually comes on. So there will be a restart in overtime. This is another problem for NASCAR officiating.
Kligerman’s crew chief Patrick Donohue said “obviously I’m going to see it the right way…I’m getting snapshots of text messages from up top… It is what it is. Parker has done a great job; the guys have done a great job… “.
PRN is describing what the television broadcast is showing – a stop frame picture of the moment the caution light came on and where Parker Kligerman’s car was in relation to the line – about a foot-and-a-half away, at most.
Restarting in overtime on lap 70 of 72 with Parker Kligerman (48), Sam Mayer (1), AJ Allmendinger (16), Shane ‘SVG’ Van Gisbergen (97), Austin Hill (21), Chandler Smith (81), Justin Allgaier (7), and Brandon Jones (9) at the front of the field. Parker got pushed to the start. He gets the early lead, Mayer comes back. Kligerman comes back.
Mayer passes him on lap 70 of 72. Kligerman shows a lot of tire smoke.
Sam Mayer (1) wins.
Justin Allgaier (7) points his way into the next round.
I hear a loud boo from the grandstands when Sam Mayer (1) begins to talk.
Dave calls it about five feet short for Parker Kligerman (48).
A very disappointing finish to a sucky event. A sorry excuse for a cut-off race. The finish actually leaves me angry.
