Alex Bowman wins the race off pit road followed by Ryan Blaney (12), William ‘WilliB’ Byron (24), Brad ‘It’ Keselowski (6), Chase Briscoe (14), ‘Desperate’ Denny Hamlin (11) and Christopher Bell (20).
Restarting on lap 171 of 267. Bowman (48), first off pit road, restarts 19th. Carson Hocevar (77) gets the early lead.
Since NBC insists on idiotic camera shots of the track surface and car tires mostly, I’m watching NHRA to see actual racing action and listening to MRN for actual NASCAR coverage. NBC got rid of the only listenable talent they had on the NASCAR Cup broadcasts – Rick Allen – and exponentially escalated the nasal factor by slotting Leigh Diffey into the booth making it totally ear-shattering. Various NASCAR folks seem charmed by his accent and ability to scream at the drop of a hat. I don’t understand why the guys involved in NASCAR mistake screaming for excitement. His constant tendency to screech caused me to seek out and become a fan of IndyCar Radio during broadcasts.
Ryan Blaney pits on lap 193 of 267 for loose left rear wheel.
On lap 203 of 267 Kyle Busch (8) is battling Ross Chastain (1) for the lead. He gets the lead on lap 204 of 267. Chastain comes back, gets alongside, Busch maintains the lead.
Joey Logano (22) is on pit road, under green, on lap 205 of 267.
Green flag pit stops are underway.
Tyler ‘TyRed’ Reddick (45) pits from the lead on lap 217 of 267. MRN reports he has some issue and is ‘zig-zagging’ the car. He’s near pit road so hit immediately pitted.
Kyle ‘KyBu’ Busch (8) leads once Brad ‘It’ Keselowski (6) heads for his green flag stop.
Chastain (1) takes the lead from KyBu (8). KyBu chases him down. Chastain tags the wall. KyBu re-takes the lead on lap 226 of 267.
Caution on lap 235 of 267 for Kyle Busch (8) spinning from the lead trying to pass Chase Briscoe (14) after tagging the wall. As MRN said, heartbreaking. The lapped Briscoe didn’t give Busch any room up top to pass and it looks like the wall just sucked Busch in.
Restarting on lap 241 of 267 with Brad ‘It’ Keselowski (6) – who stayed out – leading them to the green. The winner off pit road lines up next MTJ (19), followed by Ross Chastain (1) Alex Bowman (48) William Byron (24), Ty Gibbs (54), Ryan Blaney (12), Kyle Busch, Chris Buescher (17), Tyler Reddick (45), and Daniel Suarez (99). Restarting on lap 247 of 267 with Martin ‘MTJ’ Truex Jr (19), Ross ‘WatermelonBoy’ Chastain (1), Alex Bowman (48), William ‘WilliB’ Byron (24), Ryan Blaney (12), Kyle ‘KyBu’ Busch (8), Ty Gibbs (54), Zane Smith (71), Chris Buescher (17) and Daniel Suarez (99) up front. Ross Chastain gets the early lead.
MRN seems giddy that there have been a record number of leaders in this race – 15 – 30 different lead changes.
Chastain takes the white flag.
Ross Chastain (1) holds off William Byron (24) for the win.
William Byron mentioned in his MRN interview that ‘it was harder to work other lanes when the shade began to creep in’. That’s what it looked like to me – the racing wound down as the sun went down. Sounds like they need to start this race earlier or later so the final laps aren’t the exceptions to the rest of the race.
It was a so-so race. It had moments of interest in the third stage. Not a great race, not a terrible race. Better when the sun was on the track and it seemed passing the leader was possible. Totally disappointing finish. A bit better than a typical Kansas race, but nothing to write home about.
