Pole: William ‘WilliB’ Byron (24)
Outside pole: Tyler Reddick (45)
Weather: Partly sunny and 75 degrees. Noticeable clouds around the track.
IMSA Champion Jordan Taylor starts fourth.
F1 Champions Jenson Button and Kimi Räikkönen start 25th and 22nd respectively.
IndyCar driver Conor Daly starts 35th.
Seven time NASCAR Champion Jimmie Johnson starts 31st.Caution on lap 1 of 68 for an incident involving Jimmie Johnson (84), Ty Dillon (77), Brad ‘It’ Keselowski (6), and Ryan Blaney (12) got collected. NASCAR digital says Chris Buescher (77) went up the track into Ty Dillon (77) which sent him spinning. Ty hit Jimmie Johnson (84) sending him into Ryan Blaney (12) then Ty hit Brad ‘It’ Keselowski (6) sending him around. Ty Dillon is the first car out of the event. The crash clock expires for Jimmie Johnson (84) ending his day.
The on-track view is apparently so boring FOXSports is extensively utilizing the drone making it nauseating as well as boring.
An incident involving Bubba Wallace (23) and Kyle Larson (5). Wallace ran into Larson sending him around. Larson got going again and then got turned by ‘Desperate’ Denny Hamlin (11).
PRN’s Wendy Venturini says she heard several drivers complaining they had oil all over their tires and had to pit now.
Caution on lap 11 of 68 for debris and oil according to PRN. They said crew chief Bootie Barker says there’s an issue with Bubba Wallace’s oil line that can’t be repaired on pit road, so the 23 is out of the event.
When asked what happened to his car to take it out of the event, Darrell ‘Bubba’ Wallace (23) says he broke toe link and oil line – Bubba says, he “made a rookie mistake two weeks in a row after six years in cup, I need to be replaced.” in his television interview.
PRN reports on lap 18 of 68 that Conor Daly (50) is in the garage area for mechanical issues and out of the event.
On lap 19 of 68 PRN’s Alan Cavanna reports Ryan Blaney (12) is sitting on pit road. He says the team believe they may have a broken toe link.
Caution on lap 56 of 68 for Brad ‘It’ Keselowski (6) stopped in the grass.
Restarting on lap 59 of 68 with Christopher ‘CBell’ Bell (20) and Kyle ‘KyBu’ Busch (8) on the front row followed by Kimi Raikkonen (91).
Caution on lap 59 of 68 for Ross Chastain (1) sitting stopped on the side of the track.
We have the pleasure of Kurt ‘KuBu’ Busch in the booth with Mike Joy. F1 engineer and team manager, Guenther Steiner is also in the booth. Unfortunately Clint Bowyer is talking over everyone and blathering as soon as anyone isn’t speaking. So while we have people we’d like to hear from in the booth, more often than not we hear Bowyer chattering on and on.
Caution on lap 64 of 68 for debris.
Restarting in overtime.
Guenther rarely gets a word. Every once in a while Bowyer will ask Guenther a question and occasionally he will have enough patience to allow him to finish his answer.
Chase Elliott (9) is also a part of the broadcast. They will occasionally go to him for his opinion. I wish he was a part of the group and Bowyer had the day off.
KuBu is funny and informative. He’s a delight in the booth. When Guenther Steiner gets a chance to talk, his viewpoint is different and interesting – well considered.
Restarting in overtime with Reddick and Byron up front.
Caution on lap 67 of 69 for debris laid down by Ryan Blaney (12) and Ryan Preece (41).
Chase Elliott mentioned the respect in the first few rows during that restart. He was saying how much he appreciated seeing that and seeing them race clean.
Restarting on lap 69 of 72 with Tyler Reddick (45) and Kyle Busch (8) up front followed by William Byron (24) and Daniel Suarez (99), Martin Truex Jr (19) and Michael McDowell (38) then Alex Bowman (48) and Joey Logano (22).
Caution on lap 70 of 72 for debris. Suarez (99) lost a tire carcass.
Ryan Preece (41) has been checked and released from the infield care center.
Restarting with Tyler Reddick (45), Kyle Busch (8) up front, and Alex Bowman (48), William Byron (24), Ross Chastain (1), Austin Cindric (2), Chris Buescher (17), Chase Briscoe (14) behind them.
CBell (20) is laying down debris after an ontrack incident but the event stays green.
Tyler Reddick (45) takes the white flag.
Tyler Reddick wins.
The event was boring overall. The multiple restarts at the end provided some interest. The fact that no one seemed remotely able to actually race Reddick killed the excitement generated by the restarts. Having the other drivers in the field – seeing an almost full field, 39 cars, was nice. It was also nice to have people in the field who were there to race, not to save their equipment until the end, so there was racing in the early part of the event though the television broadcast was busy with their toys instead of showing a lot of the action live, we often saw it in replay. It seemed after a few early cautions that NASCAR told them to calm down, then the event became a bit more typical – boring.
Can we have Chase Elliott and Kurt Busch in the booth with Mike Joy please! That would be an audio dream.
