2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Race Twenty-One Pocono

Rain is falling in Pocono at 14:31. When I tuned in the Air Titans were on the track drying from the morning showers. They were clearing up weepers shortly before the showers began again.

William Byron won another Truck series race. The win is rookie Byron’s fifth win breaking the record for wins by a rookie held by Kurt Busch. Erik Jones won the Xfinity race from Iowa yesterday. It was a pretty boring race. We were talking about the fact that neither Bunny nor I were looking forward to the Xfinity Chase. Bunny said she’s not cheering for anyone to win it since the person winning the most races, Kyle Busch, isn’t actually eligible for the Chase. It seems to diminish the Xfinity drivers’ talents and accomplishments. They all look pretty pathetic when it seems that any Sprint Cupe driver can come to an Xfinity race and drive away from the field and to the win. The fact that even Aric Almirola has an Xfinity series win speaks volumes to me. I used to very much enjoy the series – before Xfinity was the sponsor. The racing used to be almost as intense as Truck series races. Now both series have lost the grit and the excitement and the races are usually boring and typically if a Sprint Cup series driver is in the field he will win the race. It again brings to mind my analogy of a professional football team taking on a college team and a high school team. The victories mean nothing to the pro’s career and standings, but can be demoralizing to the college and high school teams. I loved the other two NASCAR series and would like to see something done to bring them back up to snuff.

It’s now raining heavier at 14:36. Parker Kilgerman says its stopped raining at 14:42.

NBC is actually doing the rain-delay driver interviews I used to enjoy on FOX and ABC. Since they’re being conducted by Dave Burns, Parker Kligerman and Marty Sniderman or whomever they’re enjoyable. Unfortunately the desk is plagued by Krista, Petty Kyle and Dale Jarrett, so no one that I’d want to see desk interviews with. They’re a collection of shrill, irritating voices without talent to offset the grating sound.

NASCAR is postponing the race until tomorrow. Pre-race at 10:30am and green flag at 11am. It takes 3 hours to dry the racetrack.

Kasey Kahne says this is his vacation week and he was heading to the Bahamas after the race this evening so he will now have to reschedule his departure to tomorrow.

Martin Truex Jr is on the pole. Congrats to the 78 team.

Jeff Gordon is once again in Dale Earnhardt Jr’s number 88 due to Jr having concussion-like symptoms. Feel better June Bug! Having had a concussion last year and still dealing with the after effects I have complete and total empathy for him.

So it looks like I’ll be listening on the interwebs tomorrow from work. Well, at least the race will sound exciting.
