Masters Sunday 2016

I’m watching The Masters and holding my breath for Danny Willett. He’s finished his round and is leading. He’s waiting for Jordan Spieth to finish who is the only person with a remote chance of catching him. If he birdie’s the rest of the holes he can tie Danny Willett. The suspense is killing me (to be melodramatic)!

Spieth has been leading for the entire tournament and was five shots ahead going into the back nine. Then he bogeyed the 10th and 11th holes, quadruple bogeyed the 12th hole. He dropped from the lead to fifth place, with a chance of a comeback if he at least birdied each hole.

Danny Willet had been five shots back, then birdied 13, 14, and 16 to go five under.

Spieth just bogeyed 17 taking him out of contention.

Congratulations to new father and first time Master’s Champ Danny Willet. He wasn’t going to enter the tournament if his child had not arrived. The baby was due today. Zachariah came March 30 and Danny was the last person to enter and arrive at Augusta.

Congrats to 58 year old Bernhard Langer on hanging in there until the end. He began the day in third place. Today wasn’t his day though shooting a 79.

As Jordan is walking back to the clubhouse he asked the cameras not to get in his face. He’s so upset. He’s pale. He ended up tied for second with Lee Westwood. Congrats to almost 43 year old Lee on a great finish and Happy Birthday on April 24.

Jordan looks devastated during his post round interview. His voice is shaky and his eyes are desolate. He’s doing very well, very composed for a 22 year old.

Ernie Els made the history books this week in the worst way. He shot a 10 on the first hole – the highest score ever on the hole. Eventually the score was reduced to 9, but it remains the worst score ever on the hole.

Louis Oosthuizen made a hole in one on 16, as did Shane Lowry and Davis Love III. The three made history.

Congrats to Bryson DeChambeau, the low amateur. He turned pro earlier this week so this is his last tournament as an amateur.

Jordan did himself proud holding it together to present the green jacks to Danny.

Congrats to Tom Watson on his final Augusta Masters. I agree with you Tom, the Augusta National should allow you guys to choose when to say good-bye, you will at the right time.

Typically it was a delight to see former champions Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player make the first drives to kick off the tournament Thursday. Arnold didn’t make a drive. This is the 30th anniversary of Jack Nicklaus’ last Masters win. There was a lovely piece with Jack looking back over his career and included his son, who caddied for him for that win. When Jackie recalled that on his Dad’s big day he made him feel relevant and made him feel loved, it made me proud to be a Jack Nicklaus fan. Every son should be able to say that about his Dad on any given day.
