Tuesday – Post Atlanta – Pre-Bristol

Okay, so this is kinda exciting. I’m watching Mike Helton get mic’d up for his 12:30pm press conference about the Carl Edwards-Brad Keselowski incident. The press conference isn’t starting ontime. Its scheduled to last until 12:55 – it was scheduled to go to 12:50 and he’s allowing an additional five minutes. There are 71 on hand in the crowd apparently. Ah it’s a video teleconference. All participants are in listen only mode. So there are 71 online. Helton did a recap and said they made it clear that the actions were not acceptable. The car going airborne on a mile and a half racetrack is something they’re looking into because they’ve not seen much of that and it’s a “very serious issue”. They’ve had several conversations with Jack and Roger and Carl is on probation for the next three Sprint Cup races. They are going to meet with both drivers and both owners to get things resolved with the drivers. 15 minutes is allotted for the media members for questions. USA Today gets in the first question (Nate Ryan) – drivers policing themselves to include retaliation how and when – Helton said they’re backing awayfrom policing driving style and their grip on the racetrack. They will put more responsibility in the hand of the driver, but there is a line that can be crossed and they will step in. Pockrass has the next question and asks if other drivers can expect to get a three racesuspension – Helton brought up that they parked Carl immediately, which could become very important later. Helton said he’d have to find out what the drivershad to say about that. Marty Smith is next – if the 12 car doesn’t go airborne are we having this conversation – Helton said he’d have to turn that back around to the media. Helton said its been years since they’ve seen a car get airborne at the mile and a half track. Jenna Fryer is next and is following up with Nate’s question – asking if NASCAR knows what/where the line is that has to be crossed. Helton mentions that there’s been a escalating relationship between the two drivers. Penske asked that this can be said and done. Hembree with Speedtv.com asked when would the meeting with drivers happened – Helton said Bristol. Morris Publishing reporter asks if the NASCAR reaction was based on the history between the two was a result of – Helton said no, it was based on what happened on the track. ClaireB is next – mentions that coverage has been on the nightly news and if any coverage is good coverage – “Ask 20 people you’ll probably get 21 answers on that one.” Helton said the 12 car getting off the ground was the most important part and they’re working to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Justin Long landmark newspaper is next – asking about the payback incidents – at what point does that become an issue and what they’re doing about it – Helton separates the two – the 12 car getting airborne and the retaliation – he said look to history regarding that and how NASCAR reacts to turn the tide back in the right direction – they’re studying the 12 car to determine why it went airborne. Jay Hart from Yahoo is next – elaborate on the message he/NASCAR wants to convey to Brad. Helton says its more of an open dialogue between the two drivers to reach a resolution between the drivers and the owners there to listen to the conversation. He wants to make sure they understand the seriousness of this situation. Helton said something along the lines of: If there’s a rivalry that goes beyond the rivalry on the track then the drivers will be able to speak openly and if NASCAR needs to step in we will. Larry P – Inside Edition – “NASCAR Executives have said, Have at it and have a good time – we want to see what you want to see more contact – are the executives promoting aggressive driving?” – “We’re promoting typical NASCAR racing – side by side racing” – backing off on a grip, but there is a line that can be crossed and if the line is crossed NASCAR will get involved. David Reutimann will have a teleconference at 2pm. The teleconference was recorded so transcripts and video will be available later today. Here’s a look at/listen to things from the 99 point of view.
